If I wanted a VW for a commuter car, it would be nothing newer than a 1992.grambo wrote:Maybe buy a new Rabbit for teh commute.
As for the G-Tech meter, DAMN that thing looks awesome. I've always tossed around the idea of building a lateral accelerometer for my car ("handling G's" as they call it on the G-Tech page). I test drove an SRT-4 with an aftermarket nav system in it and it had that, just not this particular unit. I thought it was the coolest thing.

I have one of the Original G-tech pros. It comes in handy when you wanna test Baselines. Like 0-60 times and braking distance. I want a RR or an SS but Not wanting to spend that kind of money.

*I dont think there is really any car anymore that desrves brand loyalty. They are all made with teh same manufacturing techniques, in the same Mexican sweatshops. Especially the "world-motor" cars. Stamped bodies, welded by robots that need to be better maintained. So. Korean steel suspension pieces, recycled Coke Bottle rubber and plastic.......jonnymopar wrote:If I wanted a VW for a commuter car, it would be nothing newer than a 1992.grambo wrote:Maybe buy a new Rabbit for teh commute.By the time the new Rabbit's start ending up in the junkyards, all the A2 VW's will still be driving around with 400k+ miles on them.

EVERYONE said my car would self destruct at 50K cuz it was a "Neon" and they heard bad stuff about "Neons" and Dodge. Well, I caught the same shit about my 01'RAM P/U (tranny), Vespa, Scirrocco, Jetta's, GTI, Rabbits, 924 VW-Porsche, they were all gonna spontaneously combust cuz they weren't Detroit metal. Guess what...they didn't.
I bet the new Rabbit goes for days with a good home....thats the key.

I have an old G-Tech Pro also and upgraded the firmware to the RR version I think it is which gives a better read out of Lateral Gs. I used it a few times, that was about it, threw it in a box somewhere and now I'm not sure where it is
People say it's pretty accurate but the thing that determines just how accurate it is, is how well you have it calibrated for RPMs and the weight of your car. Remember how every 100lbs takes .10 off your 1/4mile time... well, imagine what it's like for every 100lbs you're off in setting the weight of your car in it.

My daughter has about 80 My LIttle Ponys:)
Either Motor Trend, or Car & Driver tested several Accelerometers quite awhile back. All were fairly accurate. The G-tech did well in it's price range. Passport/Escort makes one now too. There are several other high-dollar ones. I've always wanted a G-tech also.

I used the origional G-Tech on my car when I first joined this site, and that thing was extremely accurate! The sad part is that thing is still sitting in my glove box waiting for some velcrow replacement..

Gtechs are about 95 percent accurate,
As long as you set it right.
The rex ran a 13.4 with just a stage 1 reflash and a catback on a Gtech ss... People I talked to on the suby forums said it was more then likely off, or I was shifting perfectly
To sum it up, they are really nice to have if you can't make it to the track after every mod...

I just thought it would be fun to measure my driving skills a bit in the hills. One day, go up and drive the speed limit all the way through while noting "G's" in the corners, etc.
Next run, drive a bit more aggressive, next maniac time. Then try and increase the "G's" around each corner. Fun while commuting.
