Questions on LED 3rd brake light hookup. (56k...no)

Post by MyNeonSaysHi » Sun Jul 30, 2006 4:00 pm

My clear 3rd brake light is collecting dust. I bought the LED board from NiteHawk back in February. I finally got the ballz to take my clear one apart and glue the board in. Did it perfectly.
Image
Theres a total of 6 wires coming out of it. 2 being short to light the LED's up when you simply stop, the other 4 are for the turn signals. 2 for left 2 for right.
Image
Ok that was just basic information. The question I have is how do I wire it up? It came with splice connectors but I been told they don't work. So I guess the only other way would be to solder or use electrical tape...

What the hell do I do with this?
Image
Since the LED one doesn't use one single bulb, what do I do with that plastic thing... I found this...
Image When someone did Evils LED one... They are called special T-Taps. Would I need these? Or can I just remove the bulb from that "bulb holder thingy" and splice the wires from my LED thing into there? (I got directions on where the wires go, so I am not worried about that)

How exactly do you remove that hockey-tape shit without damaging the wire?
Image
Image
Or even this shit...
Image

Whats a good tool to remove the jacket from the wire. Since I am gonna have to do it in the middle.... Thats another biggy... how do I remove the middle of a jacket on the stock wire w/o hurting anything and putting the LED one on it... I just don't want to ruin my rear lights & turn signals.
I guess I could try the quick splice connectors since you don't have to take the jacket off on the factory wire...

I know this might be a lot of shit and rambling but oh well, maybe someone can give me some good info on what to do, and how to start this project.

Thanks.

the splice connectors worked for me perfect........who said they wouldn't work?.......I would wrap em up in electrical tape after you splice em tho

I've used the connectors sent in the kit since I bought it (around Feb or so, I believe) and they've worked perfectly. I would agree, just wrap them in some electrical tape and you're good to go.

joelrgr said they didn't work... Is it a good idea to disconnect the battery when doing this? I have to take those little plastic tips off correct? do I need to take off the jacket on the stock wire from the car? And if so, how do I do this since I have to work from the middle.

I put my carbon fiber trunk on at the same time when I put mine on so I can't remember what I snatched apart

What little plastic tips? You shouldn't have to cut the jacket, it should just clip in there real close to the plug...

OH, lol. You mean the little bit of wire insulation at the end, haha. Yeah, those come off, and your connector goes there.

Ok, I started the install. I don't want to fuck up so I posted pictures of where I am at.

There are 2 bulbs in the tail lamp. 1 is for the reverse which has 2 wires. A black and a purple one.

the 2nd one (bigger main lamp) has like 3 wires, with a black one. Do I use the black one with the 3 wires or do I use the black one for the reverse bulb.

Left
Image

Right
Image

This is what I got so far for the 3rd brake light. (Don't think I will have any problems here)
Image

Left. (I feel I have enought space to hook it up, I really don't care about how pretty it looks.) Main question I have is. do I use the black wire thats next to the purple or the black wire thats with the 3.
Image

Right.
Image

So when I put the LED wire in the connector, it shouldn't go out the other side. (duh)

When I crimp down with the connector thingy and say I fuck up for some reason, won't my wires be ruined? Since that blade thing pretty much cuts down. through the jacket on the factory wire.

Is there anyway to hook it up and not worry about the turn signals and just have it so when I brake they light up? I am guessing I would just have to hook it up to the short black and white ones...

Thanks Again for your help! I really appreciate it.

OK, I"m not sure exactly which wire you're gonna need to do, I did mine on an 04. Use your power meter to see what wires have power when you turn on your turn signals and brakes. then you should be able to figure out which wires to hook to. I can tell you what wires I hooked to if you think it'll help.

I don't have a power meter. I need to invest in a volt meter.

I know where all the wires go, but I got nothing. LEDs=no worky

Well anyway I hooked it all up and it seems like the LED wire is in there very loosely even after its crimped down. I can just pull it out like nothing is crimped. I know the LED wire doesn't go all the way through. The copper wire is the thing getting crimped, and not the jacket on the LED wire correct?

Oh yeah almost forgot... does the light bulb still need to be in the housing thingy, cause I took it out.

blah this sucks.

So, NiteHawk's product is defective? Or did I not read correctly?

Boooooooo, why aren't those easy splice connectors working?

I have a soldering kit, but I really don't have much expierence in soldering.

What kind of tool do I need to get the jacket off in the middle of the wire?

I am guessing Matt=Nighthawk.

This really sucks.

off topic, but there are several of them for sale right now - go to Neons.org and search their posts - I think I saw 2 phantom voltmeters and a carbon fiber mopar one.

They're not talking about a voltage gauge, they're talking about multimeters for doing electrical work. Like the set shown below...

digital Multimeters! I cna't blieve I forgot what they were called, and I worked with them in college. :S Also ammeters and ohm meters. But yeah anyway, I took everything apart and put my old 3rd brake light in and I noticed the crimp didn't go through the wire at all. I guess if I pushed down supper hard then it would go in and "splice" and make the connection. But what if that still ddin't work and I was left with a wire with a gash in it or even cut off. I don't want this to happen to my factory wire. I might just sell my 3rd brake light with the LED board in there. I so wanted it to work but its too much of a hassle now and it owned me. Plus it makes my trunk look messy. :P Excuses Excuses
