Intermittent no-idle situation... time for the stealership?
Well, this car has pissed me off for the last time. Here's my story:
Starting in about May, my car started to stall within a second after starting it. Acting like it was out of fuel. It seemed like, at first, it only happened when the air was very damp out, like when it rained. This all happened starting after I put my CAI on. After running it for about a month or so with the CAI, I decided that maybe the filter was getting wet and choking off some of the air going into the engine. Alas, removing the CAI (reinstalled all the stock airbox except for the fenderwell 'resonator') the problem remained.
Lately it's been getting worse. Seems like every morning I go out to the car and i have to feather the gas to keep her running. The tach needle comes down and once it hits about 1500 rpm it drops like a rock. Thankfully my car's an MTX so if this happens on the freeway, I can just 'roll start' it, though I doubt this is good for the clutch.
When it first happened, it would usually resolve itself within 5 minutes. But today (dry air and everything) I drove the car 30 miles to work and it stalled out at every stoplight along the way. I had some time before I was supposed to be there, so I popped the hood and notice the car was actually still idling, albeit at only 500 rpms, rattling and shit like you hear old carbureted cars do when the engine's too hot, etc. Well, I thought maybe pulling the fuel relay to reset the PCM would do something. So I did that, and still got nothin'. Car still stalled out right after I started it up.
Came out a half hour later and it was fine. It was also running fine when I left work about 9 hours later. Went to my girlfriends house for a couple hours, came out and it did it again for about 2 minutes.
So... what do I do here? My car has 38k and I've had it since May of '05, so it should still be under powertrain warranty.

If you do take your car to the dealership, let me know what they say. Mine sometimes does the same exact thing, dying, right when I start it up. I have to give it gas just so it dosnt die out. It's been doing it since the second day ive owned it. Ive taken it to the dealership several times, and each time they tell me nothing is wrong.
Yeah okay, it's normal to slam my gas when I need to start my brand new car. Less then 13k miles on the engine.
I believe OB had the same problem, we all have 05's? Coincidence?

I think Chrysler just got sloppy on the last year of production of our cars maybe? Hah. I did the plugs at about 30k miles. Maybe I'll get some new ones along with wires and see if that doesn't help it. I've gotta go on a 350 mile round-trip pretty soon and feathering the gas will get quite annoying.

^ i was thinking the same thing ^
i've got an 05, and i've never had these problems, but i've only got 6000 miles on it. I werk for a "stealership", and i pretty sure that unless this is related to something being broken internally, then it isnt going to be warranty.
At our dealership, we use a cleaner to clean out the intake system, and another to clean out the fuel rail and injectors. This may be somthing that you need. but i cannot be for sure without seeing the car.
You could possibly take it in and have it checked out... but if its not warranty, thats an instant $80 charge.

Heh, no thanks. I could spend half of that on plugs & wires and even if it doesn't fix the problem I'll at least have something to show for it. I'm going to see if some kinda injector cleaner or something will help.. meh I've heard a lotta people say they don't do anything, but I can't help but get the feeling that somethign on the intake side of the motor is dirty. It did it again tonight and when I pulled out onto the main road I shifted 1st and 2nd at 6500 and it cleared up.CA180 wrote:You could possibly take it in and have it checked out... but if its not warranty, thats an instant $80 charge.
Don't take offense to the 'stealership' comment. I was just a little pissed about the warranty deductible.
i dont care dude, alot of places will get you for all you got. I happen to know that everyone i werk with is honest and just really want to help. I wish you were here on oklyhomo, i'd tell you to bring it in and we could have a go at it.
I'll ask some of the other boys around the shop, but i;m sure theyll say the same thing i did.
There is this one intake manifold cleaner from Mopar, it werked wonders on an old celica i had. I'll get the part number tomorrow, it may help.

mines done the same thing on and off since i got it. it only happens every so often (much more when it was new), so i dont pay as much attention as i should. Im 99% convinced that its another issue with the ngc cars, since everyone ive talked to with the same prob has an 03+. there is no known solution for the issue, and im actually not too sure what it is. If i had to guess, id say its similar to the hesitation some of us ngc guys experience; some sort of fuel cut. I remember when my car does it, ill tap the gas and it will suddenly come to life as if nothing happened. one time it wouldnt start at all. I tried 3-4 times, and finally tapped the throttle once slightly, and it started right up. the wierd thing is, its never ever been an issue once the car is started. like, the fuel/air maps are only messed up for the start up of the car, and once the next map(s) take over everything is fine. very strange indeed. another "neon thing" if u ask me.
btw the first week i got my car I had dodge look at it, and of course they found nothing wrong. it only does it SOMETIMES, so of course when i left it there, it started up fine, and they found nothing wrong. no use having a warranty if u cant even prove there's a problem.

Try the plugs and wires too FYI this happened to my car twice. First it was because the plug in cylinder one went bad then second time because I put platinum plugs in it.
