harnesses
for racing harness, im getting a 4 point and racing seats in 2 weeks and im wondering for safety i dont want to hook them up to the back seat belt ground points. so im wondering can i drill holes in the top of the seat where the speakers are. like drill a hole in the body of the car and then put the belts up there? just wondering but how unsafe is it ti actually hook the belts up to the bottom ground points of the back seats or how can you get them at a safe angle?

Re: harnesses
you can get a harness bar that goes behind your seats. but i think if you try to bolt it down on the speaker panel in the back it will be unsafe b/c it supposed to act like a achor kinda and with that type of angle, if you was to flip over it would crush your spine or something along those lines.lvlistchif wrote:for racing harness, im getting a 4 point and racing seats in 2 weeks and im wondering for safety i dont want to hook them up to the back seat belt ground points. so im wondering can i drill holes in the top of the seat where the speakers are. like drill a hole in the body of the car and then put the belts up there? just wondering but how unsafe is it ti actually hook the belts up to the bottom ground points of the back seats or how can you get them at a safe angle?

you can use the 3 little latch hooks on your rear deck near the speekers. there should be a pic of a childseat on them. they are made for a top strap on a carseat, that would work.

ftwneon speaks the truth... the angle cannot exceed 90* for whatever reason... please excuse the crude drawing below but it shows how the harness bar, and mounting the 3rd point at the bottom of the rear seat safely give you the 90* or less angle, while using the rear speaker deck exceeds 90* (neons dont have a 4th available mounting point... normally itd be on the c-pillar, but the rear passenger seatbelt comes out of the seat kinda... not the c-pillar)

blue is harness bar, green is 3pt harness using the bottom of the lower set and red accordingly shows where NOT to mount it (rear speaker deck)

That is true tama but first you must look at your posture in the car. If you're one to sit more upright in the seat then you may chose to have it at the top. Having it more than 90deg is better than having less than 90 as having less than 90 you increase your risk of ingury to your spine in an accident.

here is roughly where it is mounted. It has a quick release so i can use my stock seatbelts and let someone sit in back.

Alrighty, this is kind of along the lien of harnesses. I've been looking at harnesses a lot for their ability to hold you in better, but they're a pain to put on every time you go somewhere and you lose your back seat really with the harnesses going back there, unless you use the B pillar bar, in which case you lose the ability to tilt your seat very far back. I think in the future I will go with the B pillar bar, but for now I had been thinking of something a little different.
You all know how the seat belts lock when you use the brakes right? Well I'm assuming that they have an electric locking mechanism (correct me if I was wrong). I was thinking that if they were electric I could put a by-pass switch in to lock them manually, so I could tighten them up so they would hold me in snug (not as good as harnesses but way better than regular belts).
Does anyone know if they lock electrically? Any comments or suggestion?

First... Harness aren't DOT approved so you really can't legally use them for the street. Also, for racing such as Auto-X and road course harnesses are only good for so long and even have expiration dates as the fibers in them break down where they can't be used after 2-5 years depending on what they're made out of.
Also, the way our stock seat belts are designed... it's not based off your brakes if you hit them or not... it depends on how fast the belt is pulled outward. Most likely a centrifugal force locking mechanism b/c if you pull fast enough on the belt sitting still or moving you can get them to lock. If you want to manually lock them though, I can't remember if the Neon belts do this but on some cars if you pull the belt all the way out and then let it retract inward, like say to your body) you aren't able to pull the belt back out until you let the belt retrat completely back against the b-pillar.
The only wire that runs to the seat belt assembly is to the drivers seatbelt to control the seat belt light on the cluster.
