02' and 03' electronics

Post by Panhead » Wed Aug 30, 2006 12:57 am

anybody know the differences between 2002 and 2003 electronics? since the late 02's had the 4spd auto, they also had the TCM and PCM separate units. the 03's came with the same 4spd auto but the TCM was intergrated into the PCM. i was wondering if it is possible to swap in a 02' engine harness in a 03' neon. i already know about the NGC so if i DO get my neon back, i was thinking of doing this and it also crossed my mind.

AFAIK some of the sensors changed between these years - you may have to get different sensors (from the '02), but I could be wrong. Other than that I don't see why not. You would have to use the PCM from the '02 cause they changed drastically in '03.

I don't believe so since some sensor are different like the o2 sensors and such. Plus you'll need to get a hold of an 02 PCM as the plugs are also different. Not only that but you'd also need to swap over the whole engine bay harness since that also has a connector for the PCM which is different. If I'm not mistaken I believe you PCM has what, possibly 3 plugs going into it where the 02 PCM only has two which are mounted on the top of the PCM, not the side like the 03+. Another thing you'll have problems with is your sentry system getting your VIN flashed into the 02 PCM so it matches your sentry system. So no, it's not a direct swap over and be done with it.

Do'h... It's getting late haha

I really don't know of anyone that has done it but I do know that the crank trigger is also different with the NGC cars so there is at least one mechanical difference between the 00-02 and 03+ engines. You'll have have a mismatch for front trun signal wires giong to the plug under the dash so you'd ned to move wire over on pin location. Obviously like you said, you will need the engine harness and the underhood harness that includes the PDC fuse box. I think your biggest problem that'll you'll face is the crank trigger.

Unfortunately, this is usually the killer for people with your idea. I'd still like to see exactly what the differences are between the 02 and the 03 crank triggers. I bet it would be easy enough to mount a trigger wheel on the crank pulley and just seal up the hole for the stock crank trigger.

whoever has the diagram/schimatics needs to post them all up so we can figure out the differences.

im planning on doing somthing a lil similar. im in the process of doing a mtx swap in my 02 and ill have the tcm throwing codes. so im going to try and swap in a 00 or 01 wire harness and ecu. i dont think ill need the engine bay harness. you guys think it will work.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm almost certain that the TCM is part of the PCM, and all you need to do is find a PCM out of a 5-speed 02 to get it to stop throwing codes. BlackRoseRacing would know more about this. If that's the case, you shouldn't need to swap harnesses around.

I think it's the trigger slots on the crank itself that poses the issue with the crank sensor.
