radiator fans: automatic vs manual

Post by tamadrumr88 » Sat Sep 02, 2006 10:56 pm

correct me if im wrong, but the automatic 2g's get 2 radiator fans where the 5spd only gets a single fan

if thats the case, can i run the automatic radiator fan on my r/t??? will i have to wire anything or will i just be able to plug it in (fan #2 is pre-wired and will pull power from the connection for fan #1)

obviously im not well-versed in this area.... can anyone guide me?

Id guess that the atx cars pcms have control over the second fan, whereas the mtx cars do not. Given that, you would somehow have to find a way to control the second fan. There are companies (HKS for one) who make 'fan controllers' that connect to the pcm and via inputs from a controller in the interior, can preset temps for the fan (or second fan) to turn on, or simply turn it on whenever they please.

bullshevism!

i decided against it already :) dont want to add any more weight than neccessary

samco radiator hoses, 180* thermometer, weather stripping at the back/top of the hood, and crank scraper and windage tray keep temps down :)

yeah, if u want better cooling maybe think about a lighter (but more effective) radiator (if they make em for neons, that is) and a lightweight slim fan (or two). good idea tho.

I was under the impression that many slim fans are universal. Hmm, thats worth looking into. Yeah an oil cooler would be a cool idea, but a bit over the top for most applications (mine included, ill admit).

MTX and ATX 2gns all got a single, large fan. 98% of 1st gens got two fans.

Parts book for 2002 does display dual fan part numbers and a dual fan shroud but there seems to be no real easy to see trend as to why some have a dual fan and others not. It shows the dual fan being on some MTX (DD5 code) so it's just not ATX neons. They even list a dual fan shroud for he Magnums but no dual fan motors for the Magnum shroud :-? I'd take a look at connector pinouts in my 02 FSM to see if it lists a dual fan pinout but I don't have my FSM handy. The 04 FSM though does list the dual fan SRT motor and it's a 4pin connector where our motors are just two pin. I have no idea if it's the same setup as the dual fan 00-02 neons though but as far as if you were to go to an SRT setup it doesn't look to be a simple drop in and done. On the SRT there is also a seperate harness for the motors that plugs into the 4 pin connector and then the extra harness splits off to the two motors. As I said though, no idea if it close to the same way the dual fan setups on the 00-02 neons are :-?

News to me. In the probably 200+ 2gns Ive ever seen or worked on, Ive never seen a duel fan set up on one.

sorry.. this thread is OLD. I have two fans on my car by the way.

I took my radiator out. And now I am dammed to find where it plugs in. I looked everywhere, and its giving me a headache. Maybe it fell off???

Can somone take a picture of where the wire goes for me? Or at least look and tell me what part of the harness it comes from.

I'm not crazy by the way. I've had others look for it too. Spent about 20 minutes. Maybe it got caught somewhere when I started the engine...

Thanks

the harness for the fans come up from the bottom of the radiator support. theres the harness for both fans then leads to one plug towards the bottom.

I *think* they are on the body harness. (At least they are on the 1st gen Neons, so don't quote me on that ....)

Not sure on the Neon but most of the 4cyl FWD cars I see that have dual fans have A/C. If no A/C, single fan..

I don't have A/C and I have a single fan.
