my NEW led third brake light... (56k see you next year...)

Got a question on outside appearance modifications. Questions about body kits, exterior lighting, just anything thats a visual mod on the "exterior" of the car. Ask those questions here.

my NEW led third brake light... (56k see you next year...)

Post by NiteHawk » Sun Sep 03, 2006 7:08 pm

Ok, so iv'e had stock red lens with white led's, and i've had clear lens with red led's, both have advantages and disadvantages...

With the red lens, you dont see the board, just the light from it, but you still have that red lens. With the clear lens, you get a lot more light, but you can see the hideous green board plain as day!

So i dediced to remedy this! Take a look and tell me what you think :)

First i sprayed the housing black.....

Then I sprayed the board black.....

Then I glued the board into the housing.....

And Viola!

So, what ya think???

Personally, i think this would be KILLER with those black housing led tails from 4Headlights...good match :)

I don't like the fact that you can see the LEDs, though. :? Could just be me, though. I think it looks cheesy.

the pics say it all pretty much....

use 320 grit sandpaper to take off the silver reflective surface on the housing(on the inside), this also gives the paint something to grab onto.

clean it well

spray with gloss black paint, i used a cheap can of Plasti-kote from advance autoparts...

use heatshrink tubing to cover the led's

spray the board with the same paint

i used liquid electrical tape to glue the board in place since it dries black.

Maybe if you were to put a little dab of that liquid electrical tape on the back of each LED, it would hide the actual LEDs better? It'd make the LEDs themselves look black and that'd make it even more 'blacked out'. Just a suggestion.

Great idea what you did.

The only thing i recommend you do now is spray a couple coats of VHT Nightshade on the inside of the lense.

That would hide the leds, but still give you the light output you are looking for.

then i should have done that and only that from the begining...

I dont care about seeing the led's, that doesnt bother me at all. I painted the housing and board to kinda color match it, and to hide the ugly green color of the board.....

So you finally copied me!

I bought those black LED tail lights, and then you know what I wanted to when we traded.

I bought some flat black paint to match the lights, and some JB Weld (I love the stuff) to hold in place in the housing.

I'll post some pictures up for you, but it looks great! I get compliments on the signal lights, and it's bright too!
