buffed out a friends 200k miles '94 blazer - 56k maybe

Post by tamadrumr88 » Sun Sep 03, 2006 10:36 pm

i dont need you guys harassing me (cough-lambostealth-cough) over not using glaze, i did enough *neccessary* to revive the paint.... keep in mind this was pre-clearcoat era for the blazer

this is how the truck arrived at 11:30am... pretty sad if you ask me... it has 208k miles, pretty well taken care of mechanically, but not so much for the exterior

first order of business - ardex rubbing compound and a heavy cut pad :)
weapon of choice - porter cable random orbital buffer
second buff - ardex amber gloss cleaner/wax and polishing pad

results as of 5:30pm

yeah at first i was kinda weary of taking this project on... i tried just a small 1' x 1' section of the hood and suprisingly there was life under all those 200k miles of neglect. then i had to go drop it off at the guy's work... probably didnt recognize his car haha

in a way this was actually kinda fun seeing the transformation of the paint, as much work as it was. i just hope he starts taking better care of it now that hes not embarrased to be seen in it :)

i have been ever since i quit detailing at the subaru dealer as a detailer (i still work there one/two days a month for beer money though).... rather than working 30hrs/week, busting my ass, and only getting like $210 after taxes i can make that same money doing two/three details (4-6hours each.. i work slow) a month... and i can do it at my own pace and i dont have to be "hassled by the man"

just recently i did a c5 vette, grand prix gtp, lumina, impala, blazer, my own car, brother's mkIV gti, toyota corrola, dangerdave's 2001 motorsport neon, and a few others i cant remember.... this was all in the past month! deciding to start working on my own is sooooooo much better than working for someone else - sucks though with college now my schedule is very tight

you guys have to realize that non-clearcoat paint is a bitch to maintain a nice shine with, but the results can be amazing simply because the paint is so resilient even after 200k miles and i can use rubbing compound and a heavy cut pad without worrying about cutting/burning the paint and leaving permanent swirl marks (ofcourse they could be taken out, just takes lots of time and patience)

id be glad to detail other neons but dont expect the results to be like the above car

did i mention that i spent just under 6 hours just on the paint? and about 5 mins on each wheel?
