Well... let me try to explain it in the way I understand it....

Basically what it is.... the "W" means Winter so when the oil is cold that is the viscosity rating. Higher the number, the more viscous it is. A 5W will flow better since it's thinner than a 10W. This really becomes important when you are trying to start the car cold when the oil is also cold. The thinner the oil the less stress you are putting on the crank and oil pump since it's working to pickup that thinner oil. It also flows over moving parts faster which is pretty critical on a cold engine that have been setting awhile and oil has started to settle toward the bottom of the engine. Once the oil warms up with the engine both the 5W-30 and 10W-30 oil turn to a 30 weight oil.

And you'll need 4.5 quarts.

did anyone know that the 05 calls for 5w20, looks like dodge is jumping on the 5w20 bandwagon with ford and honda.

In a effort to increase gas mileage, manafacturers now design engine internal tolerances with "lighter" weight oils in mind. Years ago single weight oils and 10W-40 oil were the standards. Todays' engines typically run 0 and 5W oils. The lower number represents the base oils' weight, the higher number the effective weight of the base oil after viscosity index improvers (VIPs) have been added, giving you multi-weight oil. A low first number is more important with conventional oil than synthetic when cold starting is the question, as synthetics do not thicken nearly as much as conventional oil in the cold. The second number is important when considering sustained operating temperature. The higher numbers (40-50) work well for hotter climates/higher operating temperatures. Your owners' manual will recommend different oil weights based on expected temperatures. As a general rule our cars (as stated previously) work best with 5W-30. If you live where it's very hot or cold adjust your oil accordingly, based on the manafacturers' recommendation.

So much for being an expert. The "W" means Winter
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oil.html
it means that it acts like 10 weight oil when it is cold (the "W" means winter, say -10^C),

The first number, preceding the "W" (for Winter), in an oil's viscosity grade

Mobil 1 is my personal choice FWIW

There are a lot of commonly held misconceptions about motor oil, as I'm sure we'll hear more about, lol.

agreed but don't go to cheap, the K&N is a very nice filter expecially with the 1" socket on the end that adds a little help in taking the filter off. from what I've heard so far the best filter right now the ACDelco filter and probably one of the worst is the Fram since it uses a cardboard bypass valve and the filter element isn't spaced evenly around the filter. I heard and saw this at howells open house along with some other oil filter review pages that people have done.

Use Mobil 1 5w-30 and a Wix oil filter for a 98 Dodge Viper. It deffinately runs smoother. And gets better gas mileage.

I'm going to try redline oil 5w-30 and there mtl for my transaxle. Normally I use castrol syntec blend (best of both worlds) 10w-30 w/ a mobil one filter. My 02 acr has only 24,000 on it :o

Basically if temperature drops below 0C (freezing), than make sure you use 5W30 during the winter months. Summertime you'll be ok with 10W30

just don't use fram filters.

In my 05 sxt the dealership had put 10w-30, but my car was having a hard time starting (it's Winter now). When I did my first oil change under my ownership of the car I used 5w-20 and I had no more problems starting cold.

you were having trouble starting with the 5w20 and then they put in 10w30 or were you having trouble with the 10w30?
