CAI versus drop-in

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

CAI versus drop-in

Post by SiberianNeon0 » Mon Sep 11, 2006 4:24 pm

I have a drop-in cotton filter with an aluminum bellows tube and I took the air baffler out of my fender well to create a $30 short ram...(it DOES work very nicely! )

However, I have been curious to see what people's opinions are on CAIs...Some say that they lower low end and give high end...I read a dyno chart from a first gen saying that a CAI only gave 2 peak HP on the topend...and they used the AEM that costs more than my car payment...($200+) :P

SO???? What are your ops?

I have the aem...I didnt notice much when I got it...just a bit louder in the engine bay. I had an ebay CAI before, I dont remember if I felt much from that one, probably not.

So if i built a CAI and used my cone, you guys are saying i'll gain maybe 1-2 topend HP and not lose much low?

I also have the same stock airbox/filter replacement mod, before I had an ebay CAI. Going back to the stock air box set up I noticed less noise and possible better low end. That is of corse when the pcm does not decide to randomly pull the timing.

my k&n cai kicks ass. end of story. I'm pretty sure that I felt a good difference. Might just be me. Plus the thing sounds like a blow off valve. Everybody is scared of me and since I don't race very often they'll never know that my car doesn't have 400 horses. lol

I went from a drop in K&N to an AEM CAI and definitely noticed some top end, but my atx shifts too soon to really have fun. :( lol

mine makes the car kick a bit from 4000rpm on up. If i remember right, my CAI (on K&N's dyno) made something like 2 or 3 peak hp gains, and a gain somewhere in the midrange of like 7hp. Thats prob why it feels like a kick in the ass at 4k. Mine also sounds amazing.

I want to see the dyno graphs on the 7hp midrange? What did you have on it? Because that sounds pretty good :D

The truth about cold air intakes:

They give warmer air then our stock intakes!!!
aluminum is a GREAT conductor of heat, and the stock is plastic. Youre only benefit is losing the air tumble of the air box and the bellows tube.

However you will get excellent sound, some bling.
