Engine backfire.
Engine backfire.
For about a week I've been getting a constant backfire when I drive.I checked the plugs and wires but the car still back fires.Any body got an answer for this problem? Any opinions or suggestions as what I can do to fix this problem would be appreciated.

Ok, when I'm driving fast and slow the car starts to make a pop noise and I can hear it through the exhaust. It usually starts from 20mph and on,It stops around 60Mmph.My friend told me it can be a vacuum leak from anywhere.I told him how can I check for a vacuum leak and he said he didn't know how to check for vacuum leaks,so i'm stuck with this problem. My friend said that it can also be the coil pack, any truth to what he is telling me?by the way what is MIL.I dont got any mods.nofrills05 wrote:We're gonna need some more info. My car pops when I am off the throttle and just coasting...is this what you mean?

Sounds like it could be a lot of things. Try actually replacing the spark plugs and the wires.
Could be a clogged cat converter, your fuel filter might be clogged, you could have water in your gas, or if your SOL, it could be some other ignition problem.
We need a bit more info. How many miles, age, etc is the car?

Backfires are usually caused by a timing issue....if your certain its a backfire it could be a CAM or crankshaft sensors. But as solar said it could be a bunch of things with the description given.

The car has no cat converter, when I got the car we bought and installed the new fuel pump. The car has around 100000 miles on it.The car is a Plymouth neon 96 5 speed. My dad told me the same thing you are saying about water in the gas. What is SOL?I've been speaking to my dad and he told me to try and replace the coil, and spark plug wires, but he says more or likely it will be that water in the gas.If my dad is right and there is water in the gas should I run the car intill there is no more gas or should I run the car intill there is about one gallon of gas?SolarYNeon wrote:Sounds like it could be a lot of things. Hm interesting. I like your dad
Replacing the coil could be a very good idea, especially since the car has 100,000 miles on it. Coil pack usually go around that time. The MSD coil pack usually costs around 70 bucks.
I think there is some treatment you can buy for water in the gas. One is called K100. Just go to autozone or somewhere like that, ask them, they have all kinds of stuff that you could use.
Good luck dude

unless you removed the cat yourself or the previous owner did you shold have a cat especially in texas, its required by law. What it sounds like is excess gasses combusting in the exhaust. Mine does it all the time when i left off the gas... From what i have read the neons naturally run rich in the fuel mixture so there is some left over gas that exits and combusts in the pipes and cat converter, thus creating the popping noise. You dont hear it normally because of the muffler, but hiflow mufflers and srt rears and w/ not, you can hear it.

A SolarYNeon my friends dad found the problem,it was the crankshaft sensor wires that where making contact with bare metal.I took the car to him around 12pm and he told me to drive the car around so I did and he started to say the same things you where saying then he said," when I fixed the car last week did you mess around with the wires from the crankshaft senser?" and I told him," no" He lifterd up the car and took alook around the back of the engine block and found the wires touching metal,so he taped it up and we took it for a drive, came back and everything is ok.Thank you all for helping me out on my car.If I would still been at neons.org I would of gotten alot of stupid remarks and insults.Thank you all for posting and helping me out.SolarYNeon wrote:Hm interesting.
