a new gasket??? theyre not overly expensive and its very easy to replace

Ya just buy new ones. They are cheap and you wont have to deal with anything wrong

For paper gaskets, I sometimes like to give it a coat of grease. Helps it stick when you're installing it. For rubber/polymer gaskets, depending where it is I'll give it a coat of whatever oil it's sealing.

Don't worry so much about adding a sealant, worry about getting the mating surfaces in good shape. Then you won't have problems.
