weirdest thing...

Post by radguy902 » Sat Sep 16, 2006 4:09 pm

i was in t\he store and my gf was in my car and she left it running and came in to the store. when we went back to the car is was saverly over heated. the temp was through the roof and the engine was making a nose.. so i shut it off let it cool down and start it up, worked fine ...
now nothing new has been put on the car, i did add a bit of coolint but it was pre mixed.. i cant figure it out.. did i add to much i know that i did take off the silver cap first and look in i did not fill there but did open it.. is there any chance of a air lock or anything but we have been driving my car for a week now after i added coolint... any ideas oh and teh car is acting fine now...

my car is a 2001 neon rt. has a cai and that is about it

any ideas ??

radiator fan. Had a saturn that did that and it was because the fan was dead. If I left it idling with no wind hitting the radiator it would overheat.

true true could be the thermostat was stuck. If you leave your car idling while not moving at all does the fan come on after like 5 minutes? If not, I would bet on the fan being bad or maybe a short/bad connection in some wiring.

could be an air pocket in the system

my suggestion, check everything that has to do with cooling the engine. as to find out if you have a broken fan, just pop the hood after getting the engine to normal operating temperatures. Then let it sit in idle, and watch to see if the fan comes on. Check the fuse for the fan too, that could also be a problem (just a guess not sure if it would throw a code)

If the fan turns on, well there goes that problem, could be an air pocket. If you have one of those, just take it to a shop to have it repaired. not sure how to do that one :p

Check the fan first, make sure it's kicking on, I've had two sheer off the motor for me. Once last year and again this year on my way home from Dallas, TX (yay for driving close to 1000 miles with no rad fan in the summer)

Check the relay for the fan, fuse that its on, if it's kicking on then it'd most likely be the thermostat not opening allowing coolant through. You could remove the t-stat and put it in a pot of water to let it boil, when the water gets to about 195F it should pop open, if it doesn't then it's time to replace.

Another way to see, if it starts to overheat get on the interstate or get moving down the road at a decent speed, 35mph or so... if the temp keeps going up then that would suggest that it's the t-stat, if it goes back down then I'd say it's the fan not kicking on.

This really only pertains to if there is no air in the system. If there is an air bubble at the temp sensor then it will show a very high temp... you just gotta get that bubble out by adding coolant, letting it cool, making sure the coolant bottle is at the full line so it draws in coolant when it cools, ect..
