Not neon related but another lighting mod i'm doing

Post by haknslash » Thu Sep 28, 2006 2:37 pm

Tell your 350Z frineds I'll take care of them. I just started doing this for the 350Z guys. Many companies charge alot to do this mod because the headlihgt can be a risky task to open due to its shape and design but I took my time and am making a set of these for a local 350Z guy. Gave him a nice deal too.

So far I've opened one and painted thed the top turn signal area. He wants the front chrome piece, the surrounds on the turn signals and the bottom of the main reflector painted black to blend with his black 350Z. I think it's going to look great and stealthy once I'm done!

To explain better what I'm doing I decided to photoshop a pic to show.

Here is a stock 350Z headlight.

Here is a rough photoshop of what I'm doing to it by paint.

So far here is the actual pics of what I've done....

Front top turn signal painted....

Side angle profile of it....

Another angle...

Here is a chop of the same pics as above only this time I photoshopped in the pain on the bottom and surrounds of the main bottom relfector...

Image

And last (for now) a top shot of the painted turn signal piece. The gray looking area just past that is just an illusion from the flash off the camera ;)...

Here is the now painted outer trim bezel that goes inside the clear outer lens.

Remember, this is what stock looks lke...

Image

....and here is my mod below....BIG improvement in style and design IMHO!

And here is the now painted bezel laid over the housing to give you an idea of the overall look. I haven't painted the bottom of the main reflector yet but it's just about done.

It's just a city light. Stock bulb is just a regular clear halogen....

Oooo, sweet man, it looks good. The paint came out really smooth. And man those projectors are tiny!

Thanks and yeah the projectors are super small but on this year 350Z they are actually not true projectors. They utilize both the reflector behind the projector lens and the projector lens. Call it a reflector/projector combo if you will :D. The projector lens is just there to help give a distinct cutoff line and control light in the center.

More progress today. Painted the bottom and the furthest inside area of the high beam reflector. This one is done minus putting the lens back on.....

I hate 350Z projectors (pre-06), they don't seem to be as or even close to being as good as even my TSX's, but that project looks badass, make sure you get us a pic of them installed when the owner gets them back!

Yeah the pre-06's aren't "true" HID projectors. Infact they use a D2R bulb because really they are HID reflectors with just a projector lens in front of the bulb and reflector to help create a distinct cutoff in the center of the beam pattern. They are not comparable to any OEM HID projector but he's aware of this. I meet up with him while in my car with the TL/ZKW and he knew what was up then

He is coming to pick them up tomorrow then we are going to a little location I know of to do a shoot of the car and lights 8)

Got the painted bezel back in the other lens and placed it on top of the housing to give you an idea. I think it's great now seeing it with the lens back on. Can't wait until tomorrow when we put these back on the car!

Unfortunately I didn't have time to go out and do a proper photoshoot to showcase them so we just ran down the road at this industrial park to take a few.

They look amazing in person!!!

Not too much and just right IMHO.

beautiful car - only thing I never liked about the 350z is that stupid looking door handle - body color would have been so much better than chrome. :D
