Oil low???

Post by kc2005ptgt » Tue Oct 03, 2006 6:56 pm

What causes an engine to eat oil? I do not notice any leaks, any puddles in the drive, and I do not smell burning oil... so my question is, why would the oil be a quart low after 4k miles on mobil 1 synth? I am 'concerned' about it, and am just wanting to know any possible causes of the low oil, or possible burning thereof - anything else I need to look for? btw - I have 53k miles on the car. (02 acr in case someone is not sure)

The PCV setup, Ive noticed that my catch can catches quite a bit of oil and yet some still gets into the intake manifold. Geanted its not enough to burn and smell, but it will be enough to lose oil(if I payed attention)...
I never really checked my oil level between oil changes so I honestly dont know what to tell you....
If your not leaking it, thats my only suggestion is the pcv setup...

- the pcv system
- rings
- valve seals
- the type of oil, on your next change give pennzoil platnum a try. i noticed a reduction in consumption by switching to platnum. i even went back to mobil 1 and it started using oil again. so im stuck on platnum. i just checked my oil and i have used a little more than a quarter of a qt in 3000 miles. this is on an engine that ate almost a full qt of mobil 1 in 5000 miles.
- long highway trips use oil. the oil stays at temp for a long period of time so there is burnoff, doesnt matter what kind of oil you use it will happen.

Hmmm... I will say that the reason I was checking it was because I was at the track and just 'making sure' while I was waiting (for 20 minutes ) between races.
How do I check if the rings or seals are going bad?
Also, I am going to try a catch can in the future - as soon as I install my comp 400 cam :D

Racer12306 - I was hoping you would have some insight  I almost placed money on this post you would respond with some good info. And thanks too, BRR. This stuff helps. :D

seals: puff of blue smoke at startup. with your mileage i highly doubt they would be the problem

rings: i would think it would smoke on hard acceleration. but again with your mileage i would doubt that is your problem.

maybe play around with a few kinds of oils and see what your engine likes. good high quality oils to try would be:
- Pennzoil Platnum
- Royal Purple
- Redline
- AMSOIL
- Castrol Syntec (dont knock it, it maybe group 3 but it performs well.)
- Castrol Syntec 0w30, if you can get a hold of the german made stuff, this is a "true synthetic" it might be american now, but im kindof out of the loop on whether or not the new american made 0w30 is any good.
- Rotella 5w40
- Specialty Formulations

check out the link in my sig for a how to on the catch can and a nifty little drain.

its nice to know i have a good rep on the board :D

Yeah no puff of blue smoke on start up

No smoking on hard excell

No smoke at all from anywhere actually - that makes me happy and eases my mind

I'm gonna look into Royal Purple - have heard and read some decent stuff on it. Also will give that Penzoil Platinum a try later. Thanks again!

for the 2005 model year neon dcx recommends 5w20 motor oil.

this oil was not backspec'd to the 2000 - 2004 model years like ford did. but as far as can be seen there were no changes for the 2005 model year that required 5w20 oil.

i look at it this way, it would have been a massive waste of money to change components on an engine that would be put to the pasture in another year.

DCx recomedends 5-20w like above...
Honestly here is my suggestion....
Nice tight low mileage motor - 5-30w
65k+ 10-30w or 10-40w in warmer climate 50deg and up...

If your running a turbo:
Low mileage - 10-30/40w Synthetic only
High mileage - 15-40/20-50 Synthetic
Just my quick 2 cents :)

I clicked 45k on the odometer this week with roughly 500miles on RP, no complaints yet!

Take off your intake manifold, alot of the oil will be in there.

i think thats a blanket statement for any oil

if you use a catch can there should only be a minimal, or none, amount of oil in the intake.

i have to check again but last time i checked there was zero oil in the intake after i installed the catch can.

I've used Royal Purple for the last 15,000 miles. With every oil change my engine runs smoother and smoother......Exceleration is excelent and I dont eat oil like the rest of you guys.......I loose about 1/4 to 1/2 every 4-6 thousand miles....When I first started using RP the oil changes looked bad but now it comes out lookin like it did when it went in......I also have the transmission fluid waiting to be changed out but I am to lazy.....

i've driven 2000 miles on penz plat, and maybe a 1/8 of a quart, but you can't even tell, it's such a small amount.

Penz Plat, or RP are the only good ones as far as i've read and researched. Only reason i go with Penz Plat is cause it's a Shell Product, and Shell has the best gasoline out there as well..
too bad penz tranny fluid sucks.

 1 guart of mobil 1 over 3k? wow!

I've never heard one good thing about that oil.. maybe it's just no good...

5w20 ftw! i was hearing alot of piston slap with 5w30, but now that i started using the recommended oil, you can't even tell it's on.

thank god dodge made a second start protector thing, or i would have killed my started by now, not knowing my car was on.

Make yourself a catch can, before i had one i noticed i was going through oil faster then i thought possible, under closer inspection of the intake manifold.. it had a bout 100ml of oil sitting in it, Since i installed the catch, no oil had made it into the intake tract.

i got a campbell hausfield moisture seperator for an air compressor, and two 1/4 fittings, hook it up in about 10 minutes, and ive been happy ever since, knowing that oil inst getting sucked into my intake.
New Sig Time.
