Light Alloy Wheels

Post by Marthby » Thu Oct 05, 2006 7:59 pm

Been lookin for some good light alloy wheels. I was just wondering if any ones knows about some good looking alloy wheels or links to sites. Been searchin but was wondering what you guys think would be good! What kind of benefits do I get from lighter wheels exactly? And approx. how much should light wheels weigh compared to the stock wheels?

Light wheels = Less dead weight for your car to turn over to accelerate and decelerate. As for stock weights, I have no idea, go take a wheel off and weight it.

This should give you an idea....
01-02 R/T wheels (Silverstones) weigh in without tires at 18.2lbs each.
Image

My 17x7.5 SSR Comps which are Semi-Solid Forged without tires weigh in around 13.3lbs. It's all about unsprung weight and rotational mass.

Rather than explain unsprung weight here is some reading

Lighter wheels (and smaller diameter wheel, eg... 15" >19") = lower moment of inertia for the wheel/tire = easier to accelerate the wheel

Yeah!! But I was using a really old standard house scale, but still, it's a lot. I'm trying to find lightweight ones but all the ones I find are so boring..

SSR's are great looking but spendy. Slipstreams are VERY boring but the lightest and cheapest. If you want wild light wheels, good luck.

any wheel lighter than stock is better. those rota's are nice soul sword! SSRs are looking very tempting right now they have some real nice wheels! :) so any noticable difference in the car's feel with lighter wheels? what's the stock wheel size for an 05 sxt? 15x7?

I have Kosei K-1s. Dont remember weights, but theyre really light weight compared to the stock snowflakes.

FYI, stock snowflakes are the lightest dodge wheel ever produced IIRC.
