Red Light Circle on my cluster. What is it?

Post by danman132x » Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:11 pm

My car didn't come with the owner handbook and I'm stumped on what the red circle is on my cluster, on the right side of the tach in the black. Comes on only when you turn the key to the on position and after the car is on, stays out.

That is the Sentry security deterrent alarm .
Basically it is the alarm light. It flashes when you put the alarm on.
It also detects the Key so if you have the wrong key the car wont start.

Partialy correct. It is associated with your Syntry. But our cars do not come with alarms. They have keyless entry systems but this is in no way an alarm. When you start the car every idiot light in the dash will come on and one by one go out as the PCM tells the cluster that it should not be on. If the light where to stay on your car would not run. Not realy sure why the owners manual doesn't tell you what it is. It should.

Actually... our cars do come with an alarm to an extent, it just needs to be turned on if it wasn't already from the factory. My '02 was never turned on so I had to take it to the dealer with instructions I found online to have them turn it on. When the alarm is turned on it's very basic, lock your doors with the remote and tada, light comes on and starts blinking. Once the blinking slows down after about 10-15seconds if you were to say, reach in through the window and unlock your door instead of using the remote then open your door the horn will go off, lights flash... ect. As I said though, a lot of cars it seems weren't turned on from the factory and many dealers also have no idea how to turn it on.

Besides the alarm though that light does also take part in the sentry system as stated above. If the right SKIM module isn't detected, or a wrong key is used to start the car then the light should turn on to let you know that the Sentry system has prevented the car from starting.

I did not know some of them are not turned on, I though they where just on from the factory or something.
So some of them have the alarm its just not "turned on" why wouldent they just have them on to begin with.
How would you trun it on?

That happened to me once. When I park in my garage I'll leave the windows down then lcok the car. I went to get something out of my car and when I got down to the car I was like FUCK I forgot my keys (my house is 3 stories) but I was like "O wait the windows are down lol" so I reached in to unlocked it, opened the door and EEE!! EEE!! EEE!!. Needless to say, I had to run up 2 flights of stairs then back down to turn it off, lol.

Here's a link to the instructions on SRTforums ;)

http://www.srtforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74175

This really only works if you have RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) so if you don't have that there's a very high chance you don't have VTSS. When I went in my dealer had no idea what I was talking about an insisted that there was no such thing however we made a deal that if it was there and the option could be turned on then it would be free of charge. However if it wasn't then I would pay the $30 labor cost since they didn't get anything accomplished.

Also, just as the instructions say in the thread, make sure they select PL for the Neon and not PT for the PT Cruise b/c your trunk will pop open if they don't do it right.

Well, I took mine today to the dealer for an oil change and guess what... mine had it. I'm not sure of a way yet to figure out if the car has it without going to a dealer. The service manager printed out the VIP Summary Report of my vehicle (lists all of its options) and we both went over it and no where on it did it say factory alarm - the only thing it listed for security devices were the "Keyless Entry Sys w/2 Transmitters" and "Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System."

The tech. ended up looking to see if the option was there with the DRB connected and was completely surprised that I in fact had it and that it was never turned on - he's never heard of this before.

Not surpizing... on my black car it was not turned on, on the white it was turned on. It's almost like hit or miss with some cars having it on and others not.
