Gas Light Flashing
Gas Light Flashing
When the gas light starts flashing, how much gas do you have left, 1 gallon?

I believe you have about a 1/2 gallon when it's flashing.

capacity is indeed 12.5 gallons. Seems that every neon has a mind of its own in terms of when to turn the warning light on. I typically get gas right away when the first light comes on, and I put between 9.1 and 9.8 gallons in, depending on how long i drove while the light was on. Ive never pushed it to the flashing point, and never will unless its absolutly impossible for me to get gas. Ive heard one person say that the first light comes on when you have roughly 90 miles left (about 3 gallons give or take), and the flashing starts at about 30 miles (one gallon or so). only way to know for sure is to run the tank fully dry. Ive done it before in my old car years ago, but i sure as hell aint gonna do that to my neon!

Why not just get some gas when it comes on the first time?

sensor or wires are probably damaged in some way.

If you're going on a trip like that it's your own fault for not filling up then. Sometimes it requires you to look at your gas gauge and or actually plan ahead. God forbid we put fuel in before the light comes on.TheRandom1 wrote:Maybe you're on the highway and trying to make it to the next gas stop. If you're not paying careful attention in some parts, you can go many many miles before hitting the next gas stop.
oh well...

Yes, obviously you put gas in as soon as possible. You can look at your gas gauge all you want, what if there's one gas station listed at the next offramp but it's closed? Do you stop and wait all night for it to reopen, or keep going and try to make it to the next station? All I'm saying is that it DOES happen occasionally.fixitmattman wrote:If you're going on a trip like that it's your own fault for not filling up then. Owners' manuals list the lamp on at approx. 1.5-2 gallons and the lamp flashes at 0.5 gallons.
Fuel system rich/lean monitors, misfire monitors, etc. are turned off when the fuel lamp turns on. This reduces the chance of setting a code and turning on the MIL.
Running the tank that low wears out the fuel pump much faster than normal because the pump is cooled by fuel flowing thru it and air picked up by the low fuel sloshing runs the pump dry.
