SQ setup questions

Post by MrPinkles » Sat Oct 21, 2006 11:06 am

I'm starting to plan out my stereo system and just wanted to throw this out there to see what you guys have done.

Mostly I still dont know where I'm going to position everything.

more specifically: anyone successfully mounted their tweeters in the A pillars ? somewhere on the door?

I have no clue where i'm going to put the mids, anyone have success in the stock dash area ? from the looks of it the reflection off the windshield would be horrible.

i've thrown around the idea of putting the mid / tweeters in some kickpods but thats just a bit more cash id rather spend on better components :)

6.5 seems easiest in the doors.

what are you guys running in the 6x9 slots? ive sort of come to the conclusion that I would just run the stocks off the head unit if other people were in the car, and keep the soundstage up front.

how about amp placement? id really like to fit them under the rear seats.. but havent taken off to see how clearance is under there.

I have a Boston Acoustics component speaker set in my front doors. I've mounted the bass 6,5" in my original doorpanel. I've screwed the tweeters on the mirror caps and alligned them to the center of the roof. I have disconnected the OEM speakers front and rear, and added some bass in the back. Here is my 3-channel DLS A5 series amplifier that controls the B.A. component set and a 10" DLS Iridium subwoofer in a closed enclosure. Sounds absolutly great.
Don't leave the OEM stuff connected if you upgrade your front speakers. It will only distort the high class set.

screwed the tweeters on? did it come with some sort of mount? do tell :) also, do those need to be in some sort of enclosure? or can they be free air like that

i def was going to disconnect or replace the front dash tweets. ill make sure to lose the 6x9's until I can afford an upgrade. I hear BA stuff is great.. I'm still pretty undecided. I need to get myself into an audio store and see what I like. and I forgot to mention in my initial post, i plan to run a sealed 10" in the trunk.

I think im going to steer clear of the kickpods. I was looking at the 6.5 mount holes today and they are actually angled a bit and the neon is pretty small to begin with :D

i've already got the dampening material picked out: http://www.raamaudio.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?p=pr

Yes the tweeters came with a cup in an 45 degree angle, like most tweeters do. So I just screwed those cups onto the mirrorcaps, led the cables through a second hole which is covered by the cup and put the tweeters in.
B.A. is really nice stuff but so is DLS. That's why I bought my amp and subwoofer of this brand. Dunno if it's commonly available in the US but it is one of the best SQ brands in the world.
check it out at www.dls.se (in english aswell)

theres some fair sized holes in the door right around the plastic cup that holds the 6.5" that will try to rob you of your mid-bass. Seal those up with some scrap plexi or wood. Your deadening material will help a lot too.

I'm still having a hard time getting good bass out of my doors tho, my next step is to cut out the grills in the inner plastic door skin. They look pretty restrictive from the back and I also get good bass without the skins on

I also mounted mine in the door cause I couldn't imagine 6" pods taking up all my foot room.... unfortunately It's proving a little tough to get good sound from them... Welcome to the fight ;)

I'm running a Focal 3-way set-up in front ( 1", 4", 6.5") Tweeters and midbasses in stock locations and 4"mids in homemade kicks (cost about $20) I put Infinity Kappa 693's in the rear and just keep them faded out sound is very clean. To tone down the brightness of the tweets most decent setups have tweeter attenuation and I'm set on -6db.
