Mopar MTX fluid or Redline (cold areas) ?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Mopar MTX fluid or Redline (cold areas) ?

Post by Neonisti2000 » Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:08 pm

I know this subject has been under discussion many times but even so, hear me out...

So, I'm taking my -00 to the dealer some time in next 2 weeks to get the tranny fluid changed AGAIN.

The first tranny fluid change was done in June -06 and they put in some crappy Shell tranny oil, (thou full syn), and it came out shitty.
Stickier shifts than before and so on...

Now I'm thinking if I should go with the oem Mopar tranny fluid or with the Redline MTL?
MT-90 is not that much of an option because it has weaker cold attributes than MTL (there's like 6 months cold period here so....)

Mopar tranny fluid costs 36€ (45$)!?! per quart and Redlines are only 20€ (25$) per quart... So it would be either 135$ or 75$ total (considering it would take about 3 quart total)...

From cash view, not a hard decision. And what I've heard, Redline is one of the best tranny fluids on market considering syncros as well...

So my questions are (and these are especially for those who live in cold climate areas):

- Which fluid do You use?
- If Redline, MTL or MT-90?
- If MTL, how has it been working? U been satisfied?

Thanks for advance.

Redline MTL is what i would pick.

it seems to be a very popular fluid.

Havent used it yet, but will be soon.

I've always had stock fluid in mine so no compare. It doesn't normally start getting mushy until around -30deg C or better.

What grade was the shell oil? Regular gear oil synthetic or not is a little thick for these trannies in cold areas. IIRC the mopar stuff is a synthetic comparable to an SAE 30. To give you an idea in later years they switched to ATF+4 in MTX.

I switched from stock ATF+4 (03 sxt) to Royal Purple synchromesh and shifts are much better, it hasn't gotten very cold yet but it should be soon.

Yeah, I've read that they use ATF+4 in 03's MTX's and newer.
Somehow feels odd cause it's a lubricant for ATX and what I've heard, might be a little too slippery for MTX and synchros...

Well, I've decided to get the Redline MTL in the next couple of weeks so that I can get rid of that Shell crap...

The stock oil is good, that's true. Little pissed off that I got it replaced when I was trying to get rid of stumbling.
Showed up that tranny fluid wasn't the problem...

Too bad that the Mopar stuff is so expensive... :(

So, I got the tranny fluid changed yesterday and so far seems good. I went with the Redline MTL which seemed to be the most suitable for these conditions.
Oil that came out was some crabby Shell synthetic mtx oil...

I've been driving about 200km so far with new oil inside and this is what I think:

- reduced notchy shifting. Definitely. Biggest change that come with the new oil.
- the shift feeling is more precise.
- Overall improved shifting.
