Oil light wont come on !!

Post by *ICE* » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:23 pm

last time i changed my oil was at 40,112... about 3 months ago.. my mileage currently is 43,148..

So today, i was randomly want to check out the oil and it shock me... the oil level was below LOW, it was about 2 millimeters from the tip of the dipstick, but my oil light never come on... Weird..

I thought my oil was eating up so i went to Autozone, bought 2 quarts of Mobil 1, fill in the engine, and its full again.. (did it in front of the store)

Dont know whats wrong with the light, im not sure if its safe to fill in the oil like that.. anyone got any opinion on this ?

The only time my oil light ever came on is when I took a turn too fast... no idea.

the oil light is a pressure light, not a level light. neons dont have that luxury

the only time a low oil level would trip the light is if it was really really low. and by then it might be too late. do not rely on that light, check you oil every time you get gas until you establish a pattern with its oil consumption, then check it occasionally to make sure that pattern hasnt changed.

If you need to add oil, between oil changes, yes adding it directly is fine!

i always get "your oil is low" from the mechanic when i go in for my oil change. but when i check the oil level myself on other days it is always perfect. the reason is that the oil level on neons should only be checked when the car has been standing with the engine off for a good amount of time. i check it in the morning before i turn the engine on. any time you check when the engine is warm you will get a low oil reading because the oil is all over the place still.... i think you all maybe know this already...some mechanics don't for some reason !

You took a turn so fast that your oil sloshed to one side, and your oil pickup sucked in enough air to lower your oil pressure to less than 7psi (I think that's what the dummy light pressure is set for).
