you can shift the car w/o the clutch pedal depressed while the motor is running? thats not good
I have my money on a linkage issue. either that or a completely shot tranny.

i actually havent seen the car yet honestly, but it's a first gen anyhow. As far as i'm told there's no grinding at all. the linkage is hooked up correctly as i'm also told. The axles are supposed to be fine too. so i'm set on either the clutch or the trans itself. If it is the trans, I do have my spare 2000 trans to put in
that whole situation confuses me in itself as well. I bought the trans for my 2000 Neon and it said on the slip it was for a 99. which would lead me to believe that i'm not going to have to change my bellhousing at all like most of the 1st gen people tell me...
i have a feeling the kid's missing something big with the linkage, but who knows. I may be wrong.
someone did tell me that there 98 did this to them too and it was a completely smoked clutch, he replaced the clutch and no more problems. so as soon as i get the car i'm going to check the linkage and bushings, and then the clutch cable itself, see if it's binding up anywhere and if it's moving the arm at all. then scoop up a new clutch and go from there
sound like a good idea?
