oil change problems

Post by apk2k6 » Fri Nov 17, 2006 11:56 am

So I was going to change my oil and went to take out the drain plug, and none of my sockets would fit correctly. I thought it was supposed to be 1/2" socket but that was a little too small, I've tried most sizes and was wondering what the correct size socket is supposed to be.

If you're only using SAE (1/4", 1/2", 9/16", ect) you're going to need to pickup a set of Metric sockets since thats what most if not all the bolts and nots on the car are. I don't recall what size it is though since I haven't had my stock oil pan on in a long time.

I have metric sockets as well and I tried fitting those but no luck. Maybe I'll mess with it some more I just don't want to strip the bolt.

Drain plug is usually on pretty tight. I couldn't get mine off so I took a rubber mallet and tapped the handle of the wrench in the direction to loosen it. That did the trick.

My 2004 2.0L Neon SE is a 13MM wrench size drain plug. When the wrench flats were stripped on my original plug the replacement was also 13MM. Make sure you use a 6 point wrench. If not goto you favorite local Mopar dealer or after-market store and get a replacement and the use vise grips and get it off and replace.

The Dealership sometimes puts threadlocker on your Drainplug.. well at least down here they do.

Some put on an anti-tamper marking paint, never seen anyone clean the threads and apply thread lock compound.

Ya 13mm seems to fit pretty good but I'm sure the bolt is just stripped, what can I use now?

I'd throw a fit if i found out that. They should not be putting anything on the drain plug.

like ewetho said. its just a tamper paint. we used to use that at jiffy lube. first thing we would check when a car came in with a problem is to see if the paint was still there. if it wasnt then out the door it went.

so youre saying you guys would put on some paint, then if the customer decided to work on their OWN car and the paint came off, you wouldnt change the oil after that? im puzzled

I got a question though, is anyone running an aftermarket magnetic plug? I wanna grab one, cuz the stock ones already a bit stripped, i think my first oil change at Sears is to thank for that, last year. I wanna upgrade. anyone know the exact thread specs?

no if they came back and claimed we caused some sort of damage then we wouldnt accept fault if the paint was gone or it had been more than 3 months or 3000 miles.

they worked on cars i would have sent right back out the door they were in such disrepair. gas engines that sounded like diesels and such, but they just wanted to make some money.
