srt exhaust ??

Post by TNK » Sun Jan 23, 2005 2:58 am

i picked up my SRT exhaust today. i got everything, downpipe with cat, and everything after that. but my question is.. will it bolt on? can i just unbolt the old setup and toss this in?

and another question. is the SRT's cat more free flowing than the stock Neon's? what about a catco cat?

srt exhaust ??

Post by tamadrumr88 » Sun Jan 23, 2005 5:12 am

im not too experienced with an srt4 exhaust setup but to the best of my knowledge the srt exhaust has no cat and no mufflers but it has two resonators.... on a non-turbocharged (regular neon or acr/rt for example) vehicle i believe that would qualify it as being a loud exhaust. the entire exhaust AFTER the downpipe (i believe) will bolt up but will require some valence modifications or a new srt rear valence..... can someone verify ALL of this???

SRT does have cat. The day a car is released without a cat is the day pigs fly. It should be pretty close to bolting up, but you may need a hammer to move things around a little.

the searth feature is your freind. the dowwnpipe with cat ii useless to you, as it bolts to a 02 housing on a TURBO. the catback section is what u need. disconect your old exhuast where thhe downpipe and catback meet. then just replace it with the srt cat back. u keep your stock downpipe/cat and throw away the od srt unit. this has been gone over 100000000000000000000 times. i hate you all.

Unfortunately...it is wrong info. The cat converter and the cat back section off an SRT does fit on a non-SRT Neon.

The SRT uses the same 4-bolt flange to the OEM exhaust manifold collector. In fact, its pretty much in the same location making it a straight swap. It will even bolt onto a Magnum manifold. The only exception is that if you use/have a Magnum header, you would need to have a bung installed for the upstream oxygen sensor. You will also have to notch the rear bumper a little to keep the tips from contacting.

LOL i did the same thing myself... talk about nerve racking!

I got vids on my web-page (click sig) of before and after the glasspack if anybody cares to view/listen. Also my dyno vid has a 3rd gear wide open throttle pull from behing the car.

I made the mistake of using an SRT backhalf on my 02 R/T, its loud obnoxtious, and I lost power. Im working on getting a flowmaster crossflow designed as a bolt on for the 2GN's.

Well the Flowmaster idea is great, but I cannot legally sell it. As for the All Slow but SHOW idea, yes the SRT system makes the car look good and from what im told, the sound is KILLER.
Daily driving, if I keep the car under 3K its fine....but once I hit the 7k rev the car is VERY loud. The STOCK 02 magnum resonator does not work well with the SRT backhalf as the power and noise ordinance is concerned. Its like taking your system and running just a converter and straight pipe all the way back to a dual split.
The car is SHOW and no GO.....

Didnt you install a glasspack?
Mufflers and glasspacks loosen up over time and change tone and pitch as the packing shifts in the muffler.

Sounds like it "broke in." A new exhaust's sound will change once it heats up and cools down a few times.

Well I tried something different today.....called up the local NAPA and asked for ANY 21/4 inch resonator. The guy I deal with mostly called me back with a resonator from a GM. The case is 4" diameter, 12-13" long(not counting the pipes welded to it). I cut out the factory 22k mile resonator and installed this GM model with an extension.
The results, power feels to be back somewhat....deep mellow tone...well actually here is the perfect way to descibe it..
A stock R/T with an SRT backhalf....notice how loud it is in normal driving and wailing on it to the rev limiter, the GM resonator cut the sound in half!!! It actually sounds legal now and some of the midrange power is back.
I looked through the stock resonator and I see why the car was so loud. Stock is just about a perfect straight pipe, except for a little bit, (and im talking little) of glass to change the tone of the exhaust. Remember, this was designed to work with the factory muffler, not just by itself. As for the SRT, factory it has dual resonators to keep the free flow, but also to tone it down, where as the R/T was not setup that way.
If you want to run the SRT backhalf, I recomend also using the SRT intermediate also.Plus if a cop pulls you over for noise, you can tell them its a completely factory system then....just my 2 cents

This has worked for me once... and used it to get an expection sticker. Had a few friendly words with a cop buddy of mine, who stated if its factory its ok... nice loophole!

I have all kinds of "legal" paperwork in my glovebox for random things such as lighting and exhaust and tail lights and so on, so i cant get busted from having illegal items on my car.

You will need to modify the rear valence. It won't even fit correctly on an R/T that has the exhaust holes cut out of it. We ran the SRT exhaust on my bro's 02 turbo r/t. We had to widen out the holes on the back to make it look clean. And just like the rest said....good luck with the downpipe, haha. you are kinda lacking the turbo to hook it up to.

Anyway, its obnoxious loud. Stay away from it unless you really want some pissed off neighbors / family member when rolling in late at night.......and probably get tickets for noise. ITS LOUD LOUD LOUD.
