I recomend a good quality Citrous degreaser, do a couple of good cleanings with that, rinse good, then use your favorite tire shine, cover the engine compartment with it, close the hood....start the car, let it run for a good 10-15minutes, then wipe any residue clear....keeps everything looking like new...

The degreaser I use(WellWorth Citrous) by the time you start at one corner and work your way around, the begining is ready to be cleaned off...
Granted this is not based on the fact you have years of grime on everything....

Mine wasn't too bad so I just used window cleaner to clean it up and then sprayed Armor All on a rag and wiped everything down.

When I do a full engine cleaning I spray it down with water, lightly scrub it, spray with simple green, close the hood and wash the rest of the car, then open the hood, scrub again, rinse, and use tire shine.

Been doing the tire shine for years and have never had a problem with it.

I do the tire shine thing, too. Doesn't hurt anything. The cheap shit that the All-Chrysler Nationals handed out, 'Stoner' brand, worked nicely for the engine dress up. We used the shit outta' that stuff that weekend. I think mine was gone that weekend.

I just powerwash like crazy, spray on armor-all, avoid anything polished.... run engine, walk away. Open hood, CLEAN!! Then, take out anything polished, get out some mothers mag cleaner, and go to town

I use meguiars "shine" or tire shine and clean and shine each peice, polish the billet w/ a billet polish, and dust the engine off frequently. Time consuming, but im scared to put water or anyhting else on it.

You hear so many diff. ways of how to clean your engine...I just expieriement and see what works.

Most parts stores sell an engine dressup kit, its like $40 and comes with all kinda of "braided" hose covers and the endcaps.

As far as cleaning the engine, I usually get the engine to normal temps, hose it down with simple green or your favorite degreaser and let it sit for about 10 mins, then rince, and tirewet/shine everything under there and wipe away the excess..

And as far as "stoner" brand being cheap shit, its some of the best chemicals out there, when I ran a parts store I couldnt keep any of their products on the shelf, people would buy a case at a time...
