6 grand to spend (again)

Post by Baal » Thu Feb 03, 2005 3:14 pm

Since only 1 person replied this on neons.org (besides Vitor trying to sell me his stuff) im going to post it here:

Well i just got 6,000 dollars to spend on the Neon (2001 SE), 2,000 are destined to security (rollcage, seats etc...), so i have 4,000 to spend on the engine, tranny & suspension, this is the list i think im getting, the problem is im not sure if it will run with stock ignition/oil/cooling parts, things you would ADD or remove from my list? comments..?:

Engine mods:
-obx header (dont want a very long tube header, im looking for midrange power)
-aem camgear
-mpx tb
-crane valve springs
-b&m Sts
-AFX race ECU
-Lowering head gasket (should i shave it instead?)
-Port & Polishing
---------
Tranny mods:
Quaiffe LSD / OBX LSD
---------
Suspension mods:
Bushing kit
suspension tech, swaybar kit
Vibrant STB
kyb struts (havent decided what suspension setting yet, im not if i go for the coilovers sacrificing $ on the engine)
---------

I CANT go forced induction because the car is for rally so i would jump into the EVO category and we dont want that do we? ;).

BTW someone suggested a bottom end rebuild kit + 10.5 pistons + magnum head...

Is the magnum head a direct swap to the regular head?

get a mid tube header, the obx is pretty much like the magnum with a cat delete pipe. and if i remember correctly TTI makes a medium tube header, which is in the middle gain-wise of a short tube and a long tube.

im not sure which one you would wanna take out (my suggestion is the LSD) i would definatly get a crane #12 i have it in mine, and it pulls pretty good (big difference) mill the head, and get an r/t manifold....and work from there....

look at my sig, i have crane 0014s why would i want the 12 ;) and the LSD is a MUST since its for rally.

Ok, OBX header out...

can i got for 10.5 pistons & .020 mill at 8krpm without reforcing the bottom end?

Im also thinking of not getting the 60mm TB and getting an ATX TB instead... 250 is just too much for a tb :s

Mopar Coilovers
Hotchkis sway bars
Sparco Seats

Make you own custom turbo kit with the rest of the money.

So ill probably leave the headwork out :s

Haha, didn't see that. Same list I had but take out Custom turbo kit. Then get a bottom end rebuild.

With the head gasket issues Neons have suffered over the years, I would seriously recommend shaving the head and using a premium head gasket.

I worked at DCX in the training division from '95-'01. Engineering released either 7 or 9 revisions of the head gasket. They finally contacted Fel-Pro, who developed them a gasket that handled the sealing issues.

P.S. Don't forget to reindex the cam when you have the head shaved.

rope rat remember they changed to an mls gasket in the late 90's. 98 i believe was the first year they started to use the mls gasket. ever since then people havnt had any problems.

A higher comopression gasket? or a stock compression gasket?, btw, with a 0.20 milling i should retard the timing about 1 degree right?

5k with out going boost?

well your on a 2gen board, yet your sig says " Crane #0014 camS" so ill just asume u have a dohc.

get some sort of race ecu with a higher rev limiter. get a LONG TUBE HEADER. short and mid tubes are a waste of money compared to a well designed stepped long tube. so heres the list

af/x ecu
LTH
12.5 comp pistons
used eagle rods
milled head
cheap srt4 injectors
tuning
then spend the rest on suspension shit if you MUST.

Heres my list

Magnum head p&p decked .020
10.5:1 comp ratio bringin the overall comp to 11.1
Eagle Rods
LTH
Megasquirt
24lb injectors
005 grind cam since the 14 is only really capable of only 170 with an excellent tune and luck
2.5 piping
blueprinted tanked and everything else
stronger clutch

oh sorry its cam, i have a 2nd gen so its a sohc.

whats LTH...

12.5 compression wow thats a bit extreme, i dont think an stock ignition system could handle that, and im not sure of how easy will be to find used eagle rods, and that list seems to exceede my budget by a lot.

Remember its a car for rally not for 1/4 mile, so i want flexibility and a still have a good torque band on lower rpms, im not sure about the long tube header, i think a medium would be better since the 14cam is already killing my engine at low revs, probably an smaller header will give a spark to that range.

I have a doubt about headers...

I know long tube headers give more peak HP, but will the HP graph will always be above a mid/shot tube header?, or the short/mid will be higher on low revs but will lose at high revs?
