01-03 NEON OWNERS.. DOES YOUR ENGINGE KNOCK WHEN COLD?
2.0L 4 CYL SOHC 16V (SFI)
Operating Temperature When Issue Occurs Cold Start (After 8 hour Soak)
Knock will last for 2 to 3 minutes and then knock will go away.
Will happen after 8 hour soak or a few hours of cooling down.
Verify that knock is coming fron cylinders #1 and/or #4.
This is caused Due to forging issues at the plant, when bolting the transmission in and the front motor mount to the engine the torque needed to fasten the transmission and motor mount will cause the block to distort causing the bore to warp on cylinders #1 and #4 causing the knock.

Mine knocks... it knocked at about 4 months old. (first winter)
I'd like to know where you got the transmission being torqued down to hard. I find that hard to believe. Sorry for the skepticizm, but i heard the cylinder walls were just bored out of round.

It's true, anyone ever taken a T-gauge and measured the bore of a 2nd gen block? Mine was out of round by .0002, which isn't very much but could cause it.GrApHite03 wrote:Sorry for the skepticizm, but i heard the cylinder walls were just bored out of round.

Mine does it once and a while, usually if I start my car and take off when it is cold, but I usually never do that unless I am in a huge rush.
I am awesome.Automatic wrote:Go fuck yourself Danny boy.

mmm
No one has any responses to this page of the forum.....
I still cant find this so called TSB, work or at home....heck even the TECH's I work with never heard of such a TSB.
As for the knocking noise....I guess most Mopar's do it, since I pulled an 05 Crossfire out of the shop yesterday and it even knocked when it was cold....

My 02 was knocking like a deisel when I got it @ 17K. Took it to the dealer and after three visits and me about going over the counter, they got into the engine. I had three cracked pistons. The fix from dealer was 4 new fordged (sp?) pistons. First day it was done it knocked when it was cold. Needless to say, I am no longer allowed in three of my local dealerships now due to my verbal unhappiness with the service managers. I got the cops called cause I threatened to beat the grease off the tech that told me I was making it up and they couldn't find anything wrong. These cars run pretty strong for what they are but Chrysler can't build a quality car to save their life. Thats why the resale is shit. Chrysler tech are pretty worthless for the most part. I guess theyre tech school consists of plugging a code reader in. Sorry about the rant, I had serious bad luck!

Well I finally got some info about the TSB....
Its NOT a TSB, it is part of Chryslers Solution center if a tech cant figure out whats going on with a car. The StarOnline was not enabled for me because i'm not a tech, so I used a TECH's SI number and found the aboved mentioned solution number.
The problem is it ONLY pertains to 00-03 ECB motors and not the ECH motors. As stated above, chrylser F'd up when they manufactured the 00-03 motors. BUT, its not a recall because it does not pertain to any safety problem. If you have a 3/36 warranty or any drivetrain warranty(8/80 or 7/70 etc...) it would be covered if you complain enough. Granted you still HAVE to pay your deductable.
I had my 02 R/T once already for sounding like a diesel motor, and they replaced my rockers..the noise went away for a week and was back again. Now the car knocks like a B'ch hot or cold. Even though I let the car warm up 10-15min before I go anywhere, yes I do drive it HARD...it now knocks(as in piston slap) even when its hot. And yes I'm running Mobil1 5-30. I was told to use 10-30 but I have already been there and done that and the car knocked worse....
At the rate things are going I have a TECH ready to warranty a $2200 short block for me under my drivetrain warranty. Im just waiting to get the money for a PT clutch to be installed when the motor is out. If im having one done I might as well do the other...lol
