Reverse....

Post by JBeam » Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:21 pm

My girl has a 03 neon sxt that recently stopped going into reverse. Gears 1 - 5 are fine no problems at all. We took it to the stealership and they said there is a bushing that is bad so it won't go into reverse (I can't find the paper right this sec once i do i will post it word for word) Anyone have any clue what bushing would cause it not to go into reverse at all. If so, is it an easy fix? the dealership wanted $400 to fix it, they said they would have to buy a KIT because the part isnt sold separtly.

Thanks.

"The bushings on the shifter cablers worn/broken causing the cables to bind. Provided customer with a estimate to replace the shifter cable assembly (Bushings only come with the shift cable assembly - not seperate)"

Is this what I need?

From the sounds of it you need a set of Booger Bushings, or if you want stock ones I'm sure a bunch of us have them we'll give away, I'll look to see if I can find my stock ones if you want them.

Are the booger bushings the thing I linked to? It would be better to get aftermarket ones right?

you need these -

Call them up and order em, you will get them in a few days... kind of hard to get in there, but once in they will not wear out like the stock ones... I check and see if I have a stock one lying around if you know which one is bad. I would be happy to send it to you for free (IF I have one )

JBeam, you have a private message. Just to sum it up, the bushings that I make won't solve your problem. My "magic bean bushings", as someone said, are for the base of the shifter, not the cables.

Hmm... JonnyMopar's Magic Bean Bushings... hmm... maybe. Still haven't though of a name for those things.

to be sure you need the actual linkage bushings, id take the center console out and have a look for yourself. takes 5 mins and can be done with basic hand tools. Youll be doing it anyway if u buy the bushings, so u might as well make sure youre not wasting your time. U can take a pic of the shifter assembly and post it up if u need a second opinion, we'd be glad to help. The Booger's replace the bushings at the end of the linkage (at the transaxle) as well, so check those too. theyre easily seen under the battery tray. Check all four and if its just a bad bushing, then the Boogers will be an easy fix. However, a bad bushing could mean that the linkage is damaged as well. Make sure the dealer didnt diagnose the whole setup as being bad, cuz that would make sense if it costed 400 bucks. Cant imagine them not knowing how to fix a single 5 dollar bushing and wanting 400 bucks for the job, you know? hope that helps
