1mm os ss valves worth it?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

1mm os ss valves worth it?

Post by animalrooster41 » Tue Jan 23, 2007 11:26 pm

Well at 86k miles I figured my wifes 02 rt was ready for timing belt water pump change even though she's fighting it. It turns out to be a great excuse to add a comp 400 cam, mill the head 40k with a thinner head gasket and adjustable cam gear, add a kirk ceramic coated header, new 60mm tb, port & polish the head, new plugs & wires and port match the intake ( both sides ), 2.5" exhaust all the way back and rip the cat out! I will then calmly explain to her how that worn out old timing belt was causing her to lose sooo much power, and it's a good thing I got it all back! My question is this, should I add the 1mm os ss valves from modern perf and if so how much power can I expect from them? They are not cheap considering the price of opening up the head to fit them. Are they lighter and by how much? Anyone have experiance with these little suckers? Thanx.

With the mods to support it, those valves will definately help out. Now for the total cost (valves, valve job, etc..) compared to the gain...that's kind of up in the air. If you want to maximize your power potential, then yes definately do it now while you're having the head worked.

make sure that you have a reputable person do the head work b/c they are also going to have to unshroud the valves. if you don't it actually hurts flow in the sohc. personally i wouldn't worry about it. save the money and put it into something else.
ooh...there's a glimmer of the dream left!!!

I recommend 30 thousandths on the head for a DD, 40 is getting up there and will leave less room for error in the future. Thats at least my opinion.

Thanx guy's, after reading all your posts, I am leaning towards a 50 shot of no2. I feel it will cost about the same and give so much more. I am a little concerned about milling 40 with the thinner head gasket though. The gasket is a special order (27k as opposed to stock 40k thickness). I wish I could afford to dyno it before & after, would be interesting. I am expecting about 25 - 30 hp gain, w/o no2. The job is scheduled to be done 12 feb at a local shop, so for now I am still gathering peices parts. Ordered the dummy o2 sensor today and most all the major other parts tomarro, tommarro, tom..., the day after today. I have been assured by tim from TK motorsports and dave from horsepower freaks who race these engines that I can indeed get away with milling 40 plus the thin gasket from commetic, I realize it leaves no room for future milling though. Any guesses what the new compession will be?
