Nitrous kit comparo question

Post by quicksilvr » Thu Jan 25, 2007 10:51 pm

I'm going to get a N2O kit. When, I don't know. When I can afford it, and who knows when that is. I've done about all the research I can do, and I'm still left with a question.

I've heard that some people think the ZEX kit sucks. I never found out why. I've also heard some people say the ZEX kit is way better and easier than any other kit, such as NX. So here I am.... I'm debating between NX or ZEX. The ZEX uses that computer thing that both nitrous feed and fuel feed run into. From what I understand that computer makes sure that it lets the right amount of fuel in with the nitrous for a perfect wet mixture. The NX wet kits just have two solenoids that activate and the the only thing controlling how much nitrous or gas you get in the mix is the size of your jets. So, it seems that the ZEX kit would be the best....but I want to hear from people with N20 experience why they would go with one kit or the other. I need good, well thought out reasons here folks. 8)

When I talk to most N20 users, they always talk about solenoids failing on the Zex, and if the "brain" fails, you can't really do shit to fix it.

Everyone else just simply talks NX up like nothing else... I've never really gotten a reason though.

Me, personally, when/if/ever I go nitrous, I'll go with the Zex kit just becuase of the ease of use. Hell, I can get you the part numbers for everything needed to safly use nitrous. I have them written down somewhere.

if i had it to do over again i'd go with zex. everyone i talk to that has a zex kit finds that it's super simple. the install is easy and it functions well. the zex kit makes a little less hp than other kits b/c of 2 things. 1. the solenoid draws less amps so i would imagine that it has a smaller plunger and mechanism which may limit it's flow. 2. the zex bottle valve is apparently a more restrictive design than other manufacturers. again this limits the flow. but, the safety that is built into the zex module is awesome. i have also had fantastic customer service from zex/comp. the shop that started my wiring burned up the machine gun purge module and zex replaced it free of charge. they also spent a lot of time on the phone with me sorting out wiring when the only item that i had purchased from them was the purge module. in conclusion i'd get the basic zex 4cyl wet kit, purge and bottle heater. with that you'd be set and with zex customer service you wouldn't have to worry about the "brain" failure. hope this helps.

I have the ZEX kit in my car and I've had it for approx 3 years with no troubles. I think you have a slight misconception about the kit though. The computer box is nothing more than a TPS switch and the two solenoids (I took mine apart to colormatch it). It still uses the jets to meter the fuel and N20. To be honest the only reason I went with ZEX was $$$ and the only thing I don't like is that it's purple.

Hey thanks for the responses everyone, helpful they are.

I already have a ZEX TPS switch though for my intake....I don't need another one. :?

Here's what I'm thinking. Complexity or difficulty doesn't bother me....BUT, that said, the ZEX sounds the best... I'd just replace the bottle valve with a better one from Cold Fusion nitrous. Easy to set up, and I'm not going to run more than 50hp jets anyway.

The other thing is this. I'm going to install MegaSquirt, and it has awesome nitrous control options in it. As long as the ZEX "brain, computer, thing" is really just some solenoids, it shouldn't interfere with MS control.

the zex brain also monitors fuel pressure and will cut off the solenoids if there's a pressure drop. i think that there's more to the brain than just a couple of solenoids. it includes a tps switch, fuel pressure switch, solenoids, and it's purple for God's sake. you know if it's purple it's got to be ultra high tech. who knows what all it's doing in there!

Actually, the way that the Active fuel control works is through the nozzle. The higher the bottle pressure is the more suction it creates, which causes it to pull more fuel. The Nitrous Management Unit is nothing more than 2 selonoids and a TPS switch in a purple box.

not everyone gives a rip if it's the highest hp, most winning kit ever. some of us just like dyno queens. our cars look nice, they are not show cars. the cars are daily drivers and transport our families. i used to own cars that were modded and had nutty wiring and held together with bubblegum, but that was then. this is now. the fact is, the zex kit is a breeze to install and while not providing as much hp vs. the nx, it works. it is also a much cleaner install with everything contained in the one box. for a racer i understand the draw of the nx, but please try to understand that not everyone is concerned with being a racer.

btw i have an nx kit. wish i'd gotten the zex. also comp cams are awesome to deal with. nx charged me around 18 dollars just for stickers to spiff up my kit. comp cams/zex replaced a machine gun purge module for free, sent extra parts and spent a butt-load of time on the phone with me answering wiring questions. customer service is worth a few hp in my book.
