SXT front sway bar size???

Post by jmr » Sat Feb 03, 2007 9:20 pm

I just bought a used 2005 SXT with MTX and the SRT design group package. The front sway bar measures 22mm like my 03 R/T did, it's doesn't have a rear sway bar though. I thought the touring suspension had a 20mm front sway bar.

The other thing I noticed is that it doesn't have the air box silencer in the fender ( 03 R/T did). Instead inside the fender is a 2" U shaped plastic tube that curls around and draws air next to the air box inlet hole in the fender. The end of the tube has a angle cut in it with a small flange where a plastic push pin holds it in place.

I guess DCX was getting rid of parts the car was made on 7/2005.
Has anyone measured their SXT's front sway bar...curious on the size ?

CA180 did your 05 already have a rear sway bar ?
Mine didn't therefore I don't have the tabs on the struts to mount the bar links to.

Are you sure about that last one? I thought the ACR was only one who came with 19mm, and R/T and SRT came with 17mm... am I mistaken?

All non-ACR/RT's had 20mm front swaybar. 2000 m/y and some ''01's had a 15mm rear swaybar (I just put a 2000 rear bar on my dads 2002, a 15mm wrench wraped around it perfectly)

All ACR/RT's had 22mm front abd 19mm rear. (I recently removed these from my '03 r/t and 22/19mm wrenches fit snuggly around the respective bars.)

All SRT-4's had 24mm front and 17mm rear.

GT Crusiers have an interchangable 26m front swaybay.

The other.org FAQ sould back this up....

I just double-checked. The rear bar that came off of my 2000 base model is 15mm.

^^^My dad just did this to his 2002 ES. Worked out great!

hmmm. wonder what dcx changed on the suspension for the newer neons that allowed the removal of the rear sway? I doubt they did it without making adjustments to replace the purpose of the sway. Very interesting.

YAY!!! I made it to sicky status!!!!!!!! Thanks MODS!

OB... thats not a bad theory.

But i think they did without rear bars for the sake of cost. Just like everything else they took off of our cars. Cheap bastards! LOL

I see it like this... They dont want a car to oversteer. Understeer is safer for those who dont know how to drive worth a lick. Now my SE came with a 22mm front bar... Sooo, that leads me to believe that they assumed that the larger front bar would help hold up the car, while not introducing oversteer. This would actually add understeer.

Do i make any sense? I feel like i'm mumbling...

Anyhow, good luck all.

CA180,
Why did you not stay with the 24mm SRT bar? Was the front end allot stiffer with the 26mm front swaybar?

It's really coincidental that for 2005 both the SE and SXT models got the R/T 22mm front bar. DCX must have compensated by adding a larger front bar with the lack of a rear bar. What sucks is that they didn't at least use the rear struts with the swaybar link tabs on them.

i think you are missunderstanding.

I never had a 26mm front bar. I have a 24mm.

SE/SXT 22mm, srt/and PT Turbo (non-convertable) 24mm, and PT cruiser Convertible 26mm.

I have the PT turbo, non drop top, sway bar. I guess i could just say SRT, but a PT is acutally what it came off of.

Going from a 22mm to 24mm bar, did you notice much of a difference in handling or ride quality?

Yesterday I replaced my stock 22mm front bar with a 24mm SRT-4 bar and the ride quality didn't change and it's flatter around the turns. The 26mm PT bar probably wouldn't have changed the ride much but the price was right with this SRT-4 bar and it came with urethane bushings. Besides if you go with too big a front bar the front end is going to plow big time especially with the stock 185-60/15 tires.

Yeah, i wish i could revert to the 22mm. This thing sometimes feels like its on ice. Hard braking and i get oversteer, hard accell and i get understeer out the ass. I think the front bar is far too stiff. You dont realize it till your tires are getting bald. That seem to be the best time to Daig. suspension set up. Good tires may grip, but you dont really know whats going on.

Only on hard breaking. Rear rotates tremendously. I think its just not balanced yet.

That and crappy tires...
