Why does it matter when you change over to sythetic?

So does that mean with 130K on my neon I can't change to synthetic?

well now you can change over to synthetic any time you want. I have heard things in the past if you wait to long and have high miles the synthetic oil will find any leak you may have. I just wanted to know what people thought about maybe haveing to many miles.

Yeah heard that leak rumor, i guess the worse thing can happen is finding a leak, and then having to change to natural oil... no problem

the reason you cant switch to synth after so many miles is cause of seals, some seals go bad but the normal oil is whats keeping them intact, switching to synth oil removes that oil that has been keeping the seal intact. i switched my 1g over to synth at 43k miles and had no problems, my 2g has 46k miles on it and im about to switch it to synth, its currently using amsoil, but the engine was just replaced/rebuilt back in october so i should have no problems

You can switch almost anytime, almost any. But once you switch, you can never go back!

Why would this be?

I totally disagree with the statement. I have switched back to dino temporarily (past 6k miles) and there is no problem. Still, the only way to to answer this question is with used oil analysis.

Synthetic oils may have slightly better lubricating properties, and vastly better ability to lubricate and clean for longer oil change intervals, but there is no reason why you can't go back to conventional oil after having used synthetic. In general synthetic will allow you a longer oil change interval, and better lubricity, but a maintained engine call still run up to 200,000K on conventional.

Neon sites are not the best place to get oil advice.

Try this place: www.bobistheoilguy.com

Lots of people there to run used oil analysis though reputable labs, and even some tribologists post there.

Are there any tribologists or chemical engineers posting in this forum?

Yes, that or he was simply being emphatic about a commonly held oil myth.
