What gain from removing PS and AC?

Post by LCPLPunk » Wed Feb 07, 2007 9:24 pm

What HP gain would I see from removing the power steering and AC?

I know i'd save about 20 pounds of weight by removing the AC, but just curious about actual performance gain from the removal.

I would have to say that you would not see a dramatic gain ( if any) in HP. You are really only taking away weight which in return will make you go faster

On average, 100 pounds = .1 increase in the quarter mile.

You do the math.

I have a buddy that has a 02 r/t we both have a CAI and UDP. When we raced it would be even all the way. He took off the ps/ac belt just too see what would be gained (we use to run no ps on our 1g's) and we ran it again and he pulled about a car on me, starting in 2nd and goin to the revv limiter in 3rd.

I mainly am talking about the gain from removing the PS/AC belts...i was just curious about the weight gain.

I've read that it's somewhere between 1-3 HP, but just curious if anyone actually knows.

lol my buddy swapped an 01 engine in his 96 neon and since the pulleys didn't match he just said the heck with it and is now going without a/c and power steering. he doesn't mind it much. I don't know how much hp gain it gave him cuz he started out with an engine with a back crank bearing and head gasket.

As mentioned before.....
Weight reduction in turn adds HP since less HP/TQ is used to move the access weight and accesories
Parristic loss is where you lose some hp, since the motor has to drive a hydraulic pump(ps pump) it will also aid into more numbers down to the pavement Vs lost in the drivetrain if you disconnect it...
Disconnecting the A/C compressor: the only real benifit is weight savings, since the only time you lose any power is when the compressor is actually running....
Now power gain, probably 3-5hp regained with the AC and PS disconnected, (ac gain is compared to the ac being on)...
Throttle response will also be improved since there is less drag on the motor.

BRR always on it! :)

Is removing the AC/PS belt all that is needed? Is it one belt? How hard is it to remove the belt?

from looking at my fsm it appears that it is only one belt for the ac/ps. pop it off and your good to go.

i also think that when you arent flowing fluid through the ps rack it can cause some damage over time.

OT: i just looked at BRR's post time, holy shit man, what are you doing up at 4:30a

hmm, i looked in the Haynes manual and it does appear to be pretty easy. Although, since u just told me about possible damage, i may have to reconsider.

hopefully someone else will chime in about that. I know a lot of people have done it. if you could get a manual rack, that would work, or a junk yard rack for cheap.

On my old Jetta, I cut the belt for the AC and PS. I didnt get the weight gains, HOWEVER I did have alot more pep on take off and cruising and pciked up about 2-3 MPG on the highway as well.

Was very pleased with it, the Compressor was pooched anyways and the PS pump was leaking like a, you know, so I wasent worried about doing damage to them.

IMO, removing the AC/PS is not worth it. During the winter you'll freeze, during the summer you'll cook... and handling is much better w/PS on it.

If you're car is being used solely for drag and auto crossing... go for it. Any little extra HP and weight-loss helps. Otherwise, UDP is the way to go. You'll stay comfy in harsh weather conditions and keep that awesome F1 handling!

^ I agree, I had a UDP on my old 1gn R/T without PS and A/C and IT SUCKED! of course I felt better throttle response but turning sucked...

I am a little confused. How is unhooking your PS/AC gonna make you freeze in the winter? Your heater is independant of your air con system

i just tried taking off my ps/ac belt and i put it right back on...felt little to no gain ....it wasnt anything that would make the arm workout worth it to me.... dunno bout with stock tires but with mine it was to difficult to steer comfortably and the wheel had lag in the steering b/c the load was on the steering wheel so u didnt turn right as u turned the steering wheel...

ive been thinking of removing PS from the system for that precise handling feel. Ive been told its a bit rough for slow driving/parking, but ive also heard that it does wonders when driving spiritedly or racing. Lets have some feedback from someone whos done it.

BTW, as a general rule of thumb, 10 lbs of weight lost is apprx 1 hp gained at the wheels. This is not a gain that can be seen on the dyno, obviously, but thats about 'how much faster' your car will feel. Throttle response is also improved quite a bit, because our torquey motors reall shine when they dont have to haul around a bunch of weight. thats my finding, at least.
