Leaking valve cover

Post by latief » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:51 am

It came to my attention that my valve cover is leaking at the rear, it is not a major leak, but still i will be fixing it soon. my question is: will a leaking valve cover (other than than the obvious oil loss) affect performance in any way ?

it might be a dumb question, but i just wanted to know......

thanks,

probably not. Might as well jsut buy a new valve cover gasket and some gasket maker cuz it only takes about 15 minutes to take it off and put it back on.

Check make sure to keep checking ur oil.

Well the oil loss depending on how much is leaking will hurt your car. I would get that fixed ASAP. You don't want to be driving around with not much oil. Pick up a gasket set over at your local auto parts store. I think its Felpro or something. I will run you around $20, but its cheaper than going to the dealership and ordering a gasket alone. With the Felpro set you will get spark plug seals too.

Well, do this first. Go check the tightness of your valve cover bolts. If they are all tight then it's most likely the valve cover gasket. If one is loose that might be your problem.

Don't overtighten the bolts, they are only 105in-lbs/118Nm!!! They break easy and will get stuck in head :(

Yea no shit, lol I think that has happend to every neon owner thats over tightend them, but about the vac leak, I guess it just kind of depends on where the leak in the valve cover is. I had a 1" chunk missing from mine, and it didnt really effect my performance, even tho it smoked like a mo fo due to the oil hitting my header.

you also run the risk of warping the VC if you overtighten.
