ok, so i'm an older guy that doesn't need the glass to rattle to enjoy my stereo. i actually really like the sound of the stock radio. with that said i accidentally blew the passenger's door speaker yesterday when i keyed the ignition with the radio turned up. it was about 20 degrees and pop. every since i've had the tell-tale buzzing of a torn cone/surround. so that means i'm in the market for some replacement speakers. can anyone recommend some that work well with our stock head units? i don't want to spend a fortune, but i'd like to have at least as good a sound as the stock set-up. thanks.

well in that case i reccommend stock replacements, you can get these via the internet (ebay, and WTB posts on the boards) or a local junk yard.. its no point to go aftermarket and spend money when your going to keep the stock head unit. just my .02

perfect exscuse to upgrade
stock unit sounds so much better on upgraded speakers
try your local circut city/ best buy ask for open box or clearance speakers 6 n' half inch and you'll get way more for your bucks!
As for brand it dont really mater to much as anything worth more than $40 will be far better than stock!
and your be over the moon with your improved sound
you will no longer listen to music!!!
YOU'LL Experance it !!!!!

seeing that i'm going to have to replace them i figured i might as well upgrade. however, i'm no car stereo geek. i don't want to purchase something that is going to sound worse, and i've seen that happen. anyone have any advice on any specific brand? are the door speakers 6.5's? thanks for the responses. hey joe, you should know all of this stuff. hook me up.

The speaker size is 5.25 and if you want to go aftermarket I would reccommend Kenwood(these are what i have) and Alpine and pioneer are good brands.

well, i listen to everything from classical to 80's techno. but, mostly i listen to music like patrick o'hearn, mark mothersbaugh and stephen "tin tin" duffy (for my english friends). btw joe, i checked on crutchfield's website and they list our front door speakers being 6 3/4". i think i may try some infinity's or polks. i may even swap out the rears and tweeters just to keep everything balanced. thanks again for the input.

what do ya'll think of mb quart? i found a good price on a set of front and rear speakers and thought that if they were any good i'd just replace both front and rear speakers. these don't come with tweeters. will i need to replace my tweeters? i would rather just use the stock ones to save the hassle of mounting new ones. is there a crossover in the stock system for the speaker signal to the dash mounted tweeters? if so, where is it? if not then are the tweeters just wired in parallel to the front door speakers? thanks again. btw, what order would ya'll rate infinity, alpine and rockford fosgate if i don't get the mb quart's?

those are pretty nice speakers, at least they make good stuff. The speakers from the door to dash have an inline resistor type crossover, I believe. They are wired parallel.
Personally, the speakers you have up thee I rate in this order:
infinity
fosgate
alpine
But it all depends on the level of speaker you buy, because each company makes different levels, pricing, quality, etc... so the best fosgate is most likely better than the worst infinity as far as quality, sound, loud level, distortion, etc. Then again, it depends on how clean your signal is in the first place - sorry, I will not get into it because it has been too long and most the info I know now, I have forgotten.

ok so i got a good deal on a set of kicker ds 6.5" speakers to replace the door speakers. if i like them i'll also replace the rears with 6x9 kickers. we'll see. i am curious about hooking these up however. they are 4ohm speakers and i'm trying to figure out what happens if i just wire them like stock with the dash tweeters. what are the stock door speakers? 4ohms? 6ohms? 8ohms? how should i wire these to make sure that i don't fry the hu? thanks.
brad
btw i'm still waiting on the mb quarts. if i can pick them up as cheaply as i am hoping then i'll just use the kickers in my 98 ram p/u. it's got a freakin blown speaker as well.

stock system is 4 ohms
id go for the mb quarts! but get the compents!
folowed by polk
then rockies
then infinity
then alpines
disconect the standard speakers completly for the best sound and replace with the aftermarkets
so disconnect those dash tweeters and replace them with the ones from the "component kit" or if theres not a seperate tweeter in the kit then its "coax" so fit them in the door and disconect the dash tweeters

the replacement speakers that i got for now are kicker ds 6.5's. i picked them up for less than 50.00 new so they were hard to pass up. they are not components, just single coaxials( or maybe 3 way, i don't remember). they are 4ohm and i was worried about hooking them up in parallel to the dash tweeters b/c the resistance would drop and put a very hard load on the amp. but, if the stock door speakers are 4 ohm then i'll just rewire the new ones in their place and see how things sound. the kickers are also 90db sensitive so it shouldn't take a great deal of power to run them. i wish i could have found some 95db speakers, but 93 was the highest i found and were a set of jvc's. i wasn't really keen on jvc. thanks again for the advice. btw i don't really want to disconnect the dash tweeters unless i have to.

holy crap. i decided to pick up a set of old boston acoustics 6x9's for the rear deck and installed them today. the difference is huge. not that i'm not happy with the kicker 6.5's that i put in the doors, but i wish i'd gotten boston's for the doors as well. they have much higher sensitivity and sound fantastic. i actually am going to put the infinity basslink i've ordered into our pickup instead of the neon at this point. i'm pretty happy with the way everything sounds. there are 2 things i don't like; 1. the weird angle that the stock speakers are set in the back deck and, 2. the freakin carpet was a pain to cut and sort out for the speaker grills to fit.

IMO, Infinity Reference/Kappa speakers are the SHIT! I love them! I've had the Reference speakers in my 94 Grand Am GT, powered by a JVC head unit and they sounded SOOOO good! They had real good bass as well for being coaxial speakers! If you want better sound staging, get components in the front (woofer and tweeters are separates). Good luck man!
