PT Cruiser Axle on 02 ACR

Post by kc2005ptgt » Sun Feb 18, 2007 12:40 am

Ok, I am replacing my driver side axle in my 02 ACR, and the guy who is going to do it (Cottman Transmission) will do the whole thing for 60 installed, with warranty, but I ahve to buy the parts. My question is this: should I just replace it with the 02 ACR one, or do the PT upgrade, and is the PT really an upgrade?? And does the axle have to be from a PT with trac-control/abs? Is there such a thing (I assume the PT GT would have this, maybe even the Touring edition...)?

Anyone know what the part number would be, or what the direct swap is?

I already know the RT/ACR one:
http://forum.2gn.org/viewtopic.php?t=99 ... light=axle
Found it here, but no luck on the PT axle.

I just want to make sure I get the right part, and if I can do an upgrade, I might as well... also, are there any good aftermarket ones I could get my claws on? Maybe something mucho better, but not a whoel lotta moolah?

Sorry, lotsa questions.

drive axles

Post by ACR MAN » Thu Feb 22, 2007 12:50 am

The 2001 Magnum cars (ACR & R/T) used the same part number CV axle asemblies as the 2001 PT Cruiser automatic. They were stronger than the "regular" 2nd gen neon CV axle assemblies. The 2000-01 wheel bearing is the same width as the 1st gen bearing (and fits the 1st gen knuckle), but the inner race has a larger bore to fit the larger hub.

The parts situation gets a bit odd in the 2002 model year. The PT automatic does not use the same CV axle assemblies as the Magnum Neons, and to make things more confusing they made major changes early in the 2002 model year. The very early 2002 neons used the same front hubs and 33 mm wide bearings as the 2001 neons, but just a couple of months into 2002 model year production (probably August or Sept of 2001) they widened the hub to match the new 39 mm bearing. The stub on the outer CV joint was modified to accomodate this change, so the part number of the CV axle assembly had to change. The parts catalog shows two different front hub and front wheel bearing part numbers because of this, and you need to measure the width of the bearing on the 2002 car in order to figure out which part number you need. This bearing & hub width change was done to commonize knuckle and hub machining processes between the PT Turbo and the non-turbo PT and PL.

So on your 2002 car, you need to first figure out if you have the "early" or "late" bearing width. Then buy your axle. An equivalent PT Cruiser automatic w/ABS axle will interchange. If you run an inquiry on car-part.com for a 2002 ACR drive axle, it will probably pull up some 2002+ PT Cruiser axles along with some neon drive axles.

i wasn't aware of the interchangeability of the pt and neon axles. i assume that the pt axle and cv is stronger, perhaps akin to a stage 1 dss? this is good news if so. thanks for the detailed bearing info above as well. i'll measure mine when i do the motor swap.

dammit - I already went and bought my part. I knew I should have waited :lol: Lets see here, I know I can return it, but here is my question... I have a late model ACR, build date of March 2002... so I need a 2002 pt-cruiser driver side axle AT w/ABS?

UPDATE:::::

I checked all the autoparts stores in my town and No way could I have gotten a PT axle, even though they had em. Advanced had em, but would take forever to get em in, and even then they might not get it in. :? Oreilly's had em, but only refurb'd...
Other places too much money... I went with the stock axle and MAN what a difference... it really feels nice now. Thanks for help all. I hope this info will at least help in the future someone else who has the same problem as me.
