R/T Muffler rusting through. Question

Post by danman132x » Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:58 pm

My 03 R/T muffler is rusting pretty bad in one spot about 5in X 5in on the bottom side, and about 3/4 to the right. It is starting to "sink" in that spot, and I dont know how much longer it will live. The seam on the right is also leaking, but I'm going to use muffler weld on that part. Is it possible to buy an rt muffler new, that will fit exactly in the bumper cutouts, or is it best for me to find a used one here on the boards?

Call your Dodge dealer if you want original, Should not be a problem getting one at all. Could give like Modern Performance a call and see how well say vibrant muffler fits might be cheaper.

if you are going to go new oem, atleast check with BRR.

even though the shipping may offset any discount, it would be good to support him since he does help us a lot on this site.

mine was starting to rust out quite a bit. what i did was buy a big wire wheel attachment for drill bits and went away at the muffler until all of the rust was gone. Then i bought a can of eastwood exhaust paint and painted it. This stuff works wonders.

^I don't think so because that may be considered "wear and tear" which isn't covered by warranty.... I think

I sanded down my muffler, put some "muffler weld" on cetain places and sprayed it silver again with high temp paint. There is one small hole on the right side that I covered up, and I don't think i was supposed to. It was about 1/16 inch big with a U type thing over it jutting out. Located close to the bottom seam. There was a lot of carbon on the muffler here, and thats how I spotted it. It looked OEM, but I wasn't sure, so I covered it. Any function to this hole?

i was gonna go with ask about gettign it covered by a warranty, but you already tried to fix it yourself, so they could claim that you caused it.... so scratch that idea.
best bet is to check with BRR about getting a replacement, my buddy bought both of his R/T mufflers (1 for his 1g and 1 for his chick's 2gn) new from our local dodge dealer for $130 each...

you probably want to drill a hole back in about the same spot for that water drain. it may not have helped much, but im sure without it you will rust threw much quicker.
