antenna threads

Post by racer12306 » Mon Mar 05, 2007 10:33 am

I was planning on making my own antenna and I thought it was going to be really easy, until I realized that the mast threaded into the fender piece, instead of the threads being on the fender piece.

Its still easy, I just need to know what size the threads on the antenna are. I could have figured it out, but I had other stuff to do.

So anyone know what size threads are on the antenna?

I'll check with my thread gauge at lunch.

F*ckin ay, I can't remember the password for my FTP account because it's saved on my home computer! :cussing: I took my antenna off and made a drawing of the end of it for you, but I can't upload it because I'm a stupid shit, and I'd get written up for sending any personal e-mail.

The threads are #10-24. Sort of odd, I usually use #10-32. I'll post the drawing when I get home.

#10-24, hmm. i figured it would be metric.

Thanks for making the drawing.

Hopefully my dad has a set of chasers in that size. probably does, he got a mess of them on ebay for cheap.

I figured it would be metric too. I checked with my thread gauge and it is definitely 24 threads per inch, but it wasn't a 12-24. So just to double-check, I took a piece of scrap aluminum and put a 10-24 thread in and screwed the antenna in. Worked fine.

This is the drawing. The only really important dimensions are the threads and that .220 portion. After that, all you need is a shoulder to bottom against the top of the piece in the fender.

thank for the drawing jon.

i figured as long as i kept the threads on the full size antenna as a min dimension i would be good.

i was wondering about the shoulder. didnt know how critical it was.

do the aftermarket short antennas have a couple of flats for a wrench or do you just crank it on there hand tight?

ok, thanks. i had been wondering about that. and i figured a couple flats for a wrench would really mess up the lines.

i emailed my dad last nite about the chasers. and hes pretty sure he has a set for #10-24 thread. so with a little luck ill make this antenna this weekend.

well, semi bad news. my dad couldnt find any chasers in his inventory, but he said he is going to look at work, and he should be able to find a set.

Yeah, but I figure the chances of you being online in that 10-minute window I like to call 'afternoon break', I probably wouldn't have recieved a reply until I was home in front of my own computer... which solves the original problem. :)

That's not a common thread. I've seen it before, but almost always a standard #10 screw is 10-32. Might be worth a call to Enco Tools. They have alot of lower-quality imported stuff, but they've got a pretty large selection. I've bought plenty of tools (mostly odd-size taps) from them for one-time odd-ball use and it works out perfect that way. Pretty quick shipping too.

Try Ace Hardware if you have one near you, 5.00 dollars. 10-24 is coarse thread for a #10 screw.
