engine boggin

Post by xxervio » Wed Mar 07, 2007 10:07 pm

Well yesterday i changed my oil adding 5 quarts of 5w-30 mobile 1. I also added some seefoam to the oil. I was driving home from work today when i was going 70mph i had it in 5th and tried to floor it. well the car bogged down and sounded like it was backfiring. So i treid slowing down to like 50 and put it in 4th gear it did the same thing just not as bad as 5th gear. none of the other gears seem to do it.

While i was changing the oil i ran the engine right after to let the oil flow around and i noticed a spark plug wire was moving slightly and the piston was knocking. So i tightened the spark plug down and all was good no more sound.

So anyone have any ideas why the car could be boggin down before i take it to the dealership??

^^^ Seafoam is an internal engine cleaner.

You should use seafoam right BEFORE you change the oil. But i don't see why that would cause bogging. But you should probley change the oil again if you used the seafoam in the crakcase oil after you changed the oil.

I've never used the stuff myself, but if it's like any other engine cleaner I've come across so far you've probably thinned out your oil. Depending on how bad, that does not do pretty things to an engine.

At the very least change the oil again, pull the plugs. Take a look at them, clean and gap them, or replace them. Running cleaner through engines can sometimes cause ignition issues/fouling depending on how dirty it was before hand.

the only time I've had an engine do anything like you've said is when I've blow an O2 Sensor...but that should have thrown a CEL.

yeah check your o2 sensors also --- and depending on how long you ran it with seafoam in you may have also fried the catylitic conv, and you should deffinately replce the plugs... One more thing, make sure you top off the oil, not just dump in 5 qts - we only hold 4.5 qts stock, and unless you have a larger oil filter you can barely squeeze in 4.7-4.75 qts.

I usually run my engine till it heats up, then let it sit for a good half hour before I check my dipstick after changing the oil - and I only put in the recommended amount of 4.5 even with the viper oil filter. After that I can usually squeeze the extra in. Than save it for when my car spits it into the intake on hard corners, or burns some of it up within 1k miles. :D

Good luck.

i use 5 quarts cause of the turbo, it needs a little extra :)

and ya there is no codes thrown so i will change oil first then if that doesn't work i will check the O2 sensors.

srt's have a 5qt sump stock, vs the 4.5qt on the 2.0.

i dump a full 5qts in when i change my oil. gotta keep it at the full line.
