i think i may want to start a project
Well i am really set on wanting to become good with engines and i find it very fun to tinker with engines. And im guessing the best way to get better with them is buy a real real beater and use it as a project car. What would be a good car to buy as a "fixer up er" that is real cheap but yet easy to work with?
any input?

Get a 89-94 Supercoupe
I have a 90 Supercoupe. Though its an ATX, its still pretty quick for a heavy ass car. Needs a crank though, gotta watch those balacers. BHJ = only way to go. Replace it though before you bend a crank like me though.
It also happens to be a V6, and supercharged. And RWD.

88-95 honda civic/crx. Big engine bay, big potential, parts are cheap.
Any earlier than that and you're talking carbs and you don't want to start out with carbs. And I'd stick with a 4cyl to learn with, everything's right there in front of you laid out right.

71-73 monte carlo
70 nova
67-69 camaro
65-68 mustang
71 challenger
1988-92 mustang
95-99 neon, coupe prefered, dohc mostly, and if you can find it, an RT or ACR
I started on a 67 camaro and then moved to a 65 mustang, the last car I actually worked with/on was 73 monte <-- my personal favorite.
Any older model truck or "muscle car" is a good starter to learn how to do work on because of their simplicity (IMO) and availability of parts and aftermarket support. The more popular it is, the better (IMO).

that was my very first car i ever had, i still miss that thing. MAN that thing was a rocket! i know it's not super fast but that damn thing hauled some serious ass, beat many many cars. And then always got asked is that the turbo model, i would just laugh and say no.03blackrt wrote:racer12306 wrote: shadow v-6 w/manual trans available but rare
Still tempted when i find a job to pick another one up and make the body perfect, find a nice set of wheels. Do the suspension right and build the motor up by a guy around here that specially builds the 3.0 motors... And a roll cage

Lots to tinker with on those. Cheap as hell to get. Plus you can open up any Jegs or Summit catalog and just order what you want. Plus you can open up the paper and find parts most of the time as well. The engine bays are large and easy to get to most of the stuff you need to get a wrench on (unlike Neons and other compacts)glasswars wrote:80's camaro
