What a f*cking day...

Got a question on outside appearance modifications. Questions about body kits, exterior lighting, just anything thats a visual mod on the "exterior" of the car. Ask those questions here.

What a f*cking day...

Post by 03sxt » Wed Mar 21, 2007 4:42 pm

Alright, well, ya'll remember my experience last year with the bent lip on my rim... If not, well, there's a thread somewhere... But anyways... I was coming home from Cleveland yesterday on I-90 and hit a pretty rough dip right before a bridge and tweaked it a bit more and the bastard went flat. Well, the bend is a bit more noticeable now so I figured the wheel was hopeless. I tried to fill the tire back up and when I reached about 35 psi, the air blew out the side of the wheel where the bead sits.

Well, I took the wheel and tire to a local tire shop and the tire's destroyed. The inner rubber lining or whatever was a pile of rubber dust in the bottom of the tire. They told me that I was lucky I couldn't get 50 psi of air in the tire because it probably would have blown up in my face. Okay. So the tire's shot... Is there anything they can do about the cheap ass rim? Sure! What I was thinking - Take a BFH (Big F*cking Hammer) to it. Three whacks into the deal, all the paint flaked off the area of the bend and the edge of the lip was all chewed up. I stopped the guy and said, "You know what? Before you put much more labor into this, the wheel's trashed and I can't put it back on the car looking like that - Functional or not."

So that's where I stand - Minus a wheel and a tire. I guess I'll go back out tomorrow (when I'm not all pissed off) and put the winter tires and wheels back on. Now WheelMax (where I got the pieces of trash) had a policy where you can only buy wheels & tires in packages (except under certain circumstances), but they discontinued the Exel RH-5 wheels, so I guess that doesn't really help, does it?

Ugh. What a pain in the ass. So even if the wheel was repairable, the lip would have to be sanded down and the whole wheel would have to be repainted to match the other three.

I guess what I'll probably end up doing is selling the three remaining wheels and tires and write this off as a lesson learned - Never buy cheap wheels. I already tried looking for any individuals selling just one wheel and the only luck I had was someone selling a complete set of the RH-5's in White - Which, obviously, will not work.

This sucks. I've gotta' come up with something before Carlisle in July because the car definitely will not be show-worthy will black steelies.

That sucks man. But it doesn't only go for cheap wheels. One of my 155 dollar each rims is bent pretty good.

I'm sure you'll find something Mike.

Either a new wheel, or someone selling a set cheap.

If not, let me know, I have 5 different sets of wheels for my car, and I'll bring a spare set to Carlisle with me, and we can put them on your car 8)

if it's aluminum it can be straightened ... even if the metal is chewed up a bit .. but heavy scarring cant be easily repaired without welding .. thats when the question of ... is 200$ labor worth it on a 100$ wheel

Wow, that's a lot of sets!

I'm half tempted to just pick up a set of SRT-4 wheels or something if I can find a set for a decent price. Will my tires (that I had on these) fit SRT-4 rims? They're 205/45/17's...

Any Road Hazard Warranty probably would have done me no good since the wheels are discontinued from the only retailer that sold them.

dude im not a told you so kind of guy but if i recall correctly you posted a thread before you got the rims stating that you were getting them from wheel max and i told you in that thread dont do it cause wheelmax discontinue rims and the excel rims are softer and wheel max is the only people that makes them for some strange reason.

When i had my rims and the same problem happend they told me that i was SOL but i called again and talk to this really kewl dude, he said that the excel rims are made twice a year so if they are discontinued around spring then you would have to wait till fall for them to come back out, or vice verse.

They are going to come out with more ask to speak with the owner and see if he can locate you one in the warehouse thats out of a set. I had him check for me but he told me Naw we dont have that color we have crome :(

Good luck man!

silver's wheels are already sold...i cant remember to who though.

that sucks about yours though. Id just keep an eye out for some nice aftermarket ones. but not excel's or any cheap brand. Some brands do hold up well, but there are others you should avoid. im very sorry to hear about your wheel...hope you get new ones soon! did you try some other wheel sites to see if anyone has an extra left? then you could sell your whole set.

just by two wheels that you really like and join the mismatch club.... its not like you see both sides of the car at the same time :D

and then when people see one side after seeing the other side a few days ago you can say that you just alternate different wheels

Hahaha... No mismatched wheels for me.

Thanks everyone... I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do while I continue to try to get a human on the phone at WheelMax. I guess I'm just going to do keep my eyes out for a decent set of wheels in case any deals come up. Hey, eclectic, are you interested in selling any of your wheels?

I am officially attempting to become 2GN's official wheel whore.

If you want me to bring you a set (or two :P) to pick from for Carlisel, let me know which set you want :D 8)

You can see that just after a couple whacks with the hammer, it took most of the bend out of the lip - It just chipped the shit out of the paint around that area. Maybe with a bit of sanding and some paint, it'll look as good as new?

Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out what would be the best way to 'sand' the wheel down... Sandblast? Sandpaper?

And then I'll probably have to repaint all of them in order to get them to match perfectly...

BTW, someone would have my nuts in a sling and never get in my car again if I joined the 'mismatched wheel club.' :P

Any wheel repair place worth something should be able to have the bend almost perfect for less than 100 bucks. Then just have all your rims powdercoated for 300 more and you're all set.
