engine stalls in cold weather, too "heavy" oil

Post by tamadrumr88 » Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:55 pm

this hasnt happened recently but i wanted some help for next winter. i live in eastern pa and as you know it can get quite cold. when temps were as low as single digits (and even the high teens on some occasions), my engine would just shut off entirely. my car is stick but it wasnt actually *stalling* - it had shut off while i was moving and in one case i had been going around a corner at about 30mph. without power brakes and power steering, i came very close to the curb on the opposite side of the street and i nearly shit my pants. its happened about 4 times total and 3 have been while i was driving. i believe im running 10w-30 now. should i be running lower weight, like 5w-30 during winter????

im not 100% positive, but as far as i know all neons use 5w-30
i remember i used to put 10 weight in but the car seemed groggy so i changed it back

remember, if all else fails look into the manual, it should tell you

You should be running 5w30 that is what it calls for. The heavier oil is not helping you with bearing protection. The heavier oil is reducing your power and fuel mileage. The heavier the oil the more power it takes to turn the oil pump, and that is power that is not going to the wheels.
