turbo exhaust set up

Post by crowd00control » Wed Mar 28, 2007 10:20 am

I know for a turbo, the more air the goes in, the more air that has to go out. my exhaust is pretty restricting atm. I believe I still have the stock cat, and piping hooked right up to my muffler.

I was told for autocrossing that some back pressure is good for turbos for quick spool ups or more torque or something (my good friend autocrosses lotus cars and wants me to autocross with him a lot) he told me to not worry about my exhaust and concentrate on safety/handling/learning how to drive the car stuff.

with my current set up, and driving style, i prefer straight line drag racing in my neon over autox. my question is, which route should I go? Leave my current exhaust on, leave my current exhaust on and add a dump switch, or go with a full 3"cat back system. Which would be ideal for street/drag?

Probably not unless you're making more than 20psi.

would it help cooling the turbo though? i don't care too much about performance gains, I'd just like everything to last longer.

Not really. It may or may not reduce intake temps depending on the efficiency of it, which just reduce the likelyhood of detonation at higher boost levels and slightly increase power. What you have is good, and you could crank things up way higher without having problems.

I would either add a cutout to your existing exhaust or run 3" turbo back. I'm running factory srt downpipe w/cat and 2.5" exhaust w/o a muffler/resonator and it sounds really good imo.

2.5 should be big enough unless you plan on running large amounts of boost. If so go 3

I would say more like 30psi is a high number.

I'm leaning heavily on the cutout because I love the quietness/look of my current exhaust. With the flip of the switch and not too many added pounds, she'll be race ready!
