Gym Go-ers/Workouts

Post by J8t4m » Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:18 am

Hey all

Ive been trying to whip my body into shape over the last couple months (2 to be exact)

When I hit 220 pounds I knew it was time to start shedding some weight (My normal weight it about 185) . . I'm 6' 1

So Ive been torching my body and tackling my workouts pretty hard :owned: . . . I'm surprised my body didnt shut down on me when I first started honestly . . .

Ive been doing two'a'days - an hour each time (before and after work) - and then ive been doing 50+ pushups/situps/crunches at home before bed . . . I'm seeing great results so far . . I'm only down to 205 pounds, but I've shed alot of fat . . . So I think alot of the weight is the muscle Im gaining . . .

Ive also switched my diet up quit a bit as well . . Ive cut my fat and calorie in take in half . . .my body was hurting for the first 2 weeks . . .

Ive got a pretty big PT test coming up for a firefighter poistion that I'm trying out for . . .so I'm trying really hard to hit all my goals by then

I was just curious if there was anyone else on here that is trying to hit a goal or even working out at all ?

I'm trying to loose weight... I am, but the fat isn't going away (noticably) I'm down from 210 to 193 but my scale says i'm my body fat % is still 23%... so as my weight has dropped that % has only come down 3%.... Though, my current work schedule does not give me time to work out often or regularly, but i've done most of this through diet.

Last March I realized I had hit bottom when it came to my eating habits, drinking, and lack of working out. I tipped the scales at 260. I decided something had to be done. I went up to the local army recruiters office and started getting everything together paperwork wise to join. I needed to be at 25%bf to enlist. They measured my height, weight, waist, and all that good stuff. I was shocked when they let me know I was at 36%bf. So I started running with a recruiter 3 times a week and working out on my own 2-3 times a week by walking w/ my gf. Once summer rolled around mowing lawns around my neighborhood helped me quite a bit. By the time August rolled around I was down to 210 and 27%bf. I started learning Muay Thai kickboxing and that was the most fun I had ever had working out. In October I was down to 190lbs. As it started getting cooler again I started working more and working out less. I decided against going into the army at this point. So before I knew it the holidays had came and gone and I had put some weight back on. In January I decided enough is enough I was 210 again and that wasn't where I wanted to be. I started running longer distances more often. I am still averaging 20-30miles a week. I've been in the process of enlisting in the navy, but at the moment it doesn't look like I am going to make it in due to a hereditary disease in my family health history. So now I am working out just for the health benefits and basically as a hobby. I've stayed at 185-190 for almost a month now and my bf is at 19%. I'm working out 6 days a week. Running 4 days and lifting 2. Sorry for the novel, but there is my workout history and where I am now.

I completely agree . . . before I joined a gym my workouts were very similar to some of those shown in the 300 workout (ive been reading about the workout for about a month now)

I used to load up about 50 pounds in a pack and do everything . . .run . . . pushups . . .pull ups . .
I also use to hold 30 lb dumbbells and run . . .
Ive ran until Ive thrown up before . . .

I really like going to an exetreme so when I hear of exetreme workouts . . I also enjoy reading about them. . . I guess thats why Im a fan of two'a'days sometimes even three'a'days - I really like pushing my body until failure . . .then doing it again 10-20 minutes later . . I see some of the guys at the gym that are really well scuplted and look good . . but I would be willing to bet that some of those guys could NOT perform like a true ahtlete if push came to shove . . .

this is like apple and oranges....

your trainging your body for some overall muscle strengh but mostly for muscle and vascular endurance.....they push their bodies to failure as well but its each muscle group they are shapping on that particular work out....and what define a true athlete...... im surf half actually all the bbplayers could not surf..... they all all "athletes" and they are both sports

I think maybe we're saying the same things here . . .

Im by no means saying I have no respect for body builders . . Its a hard thing to do and takes ALOT of devotion . . I can respect that

My overall opinion. . and the way I like to work out is this: Push each part of your body till failure . . then move on to the next part . . push till failure . . and so on and so on in a rapid motion

And I think what defines an athlete is someone who is willing to give until theres nothing more to give . . Sure a BBplayer wouldnt make a very good surfer . . .and a surfer wouldnt make a good football player . . But all of those sports takes alot of conditioning and alot of endurance . . And I know that alot of the body builders that frequent my gym couldnt run much more than a mile . . But I do consider the big time body building competitions a sport . . therefore those body builder are athletes - I guess what Im saying is this :
I Consider "real world" conditioning the type of conditioning that would allow you to use your body in certain extreme situations rather it be relying on your strength to help someone or being able to run at a sustained speed for a long period of time . . I think an overall "real world" conditiong is more beneficial than just plain "solid mass" . . Much like how the military whips your ass into shape . . I PERSONALLY feel that to be MUCH more beneficial and have much more real life application

Thats just my .02 cents . . and again I have respect for anyone that can devote time and effort to acheiving something they feel is important

I am 6'1" 205 right now, I used to be 165 (5 years ago to be exact) then I quit smoking... went all the way up to 235 lbs  Finally, I started eating right and drank less pop - I lost all my weight without truely "dieting" - just eating better foods (more fruits and veggies, whole grains, less trans and sat fats, as well as lots of water) more times during the day and not late at night, I took off the weight - all with no working out, except walking with my wife during the week when it is nice out.

Got to college last year weighted 185 with 21% body fat. got into working out off an on last year and into it again now. I am now 172 with 14% body fat and all my my max weight for lifting has almost doubled.

usually go to the gym 3-4 times a week doing only one or 2 muscle groups in a day. usually will do 3 sets of an exercise in sets of 12,10,8 with increasing weight each set. End of each workout includes a 15-20min cardio workout.

once each week i will also play an intramural sport or get a game a dodgeball together.

Been lifting for over 3yrs. Im naturally a big boy so I just went with it. No ambitions of 6packs for me.

The weirdest thing bout losing weight is you have to eat more often. 6 meals a day speeds up your motabalizm (sp?) versus eating 3 times a day.

Plus change up your workout every 8 to 10 wks so your body doesnt become acustom to what you are doing. The body is very adaptive & needs constant change.

Vid of me deadlifting.

I agree - so much of it is in your diet . . especially in america . . .

I just weighed myself lastnight . . Im down to 200 flat - that means ive lost 5 pounds in one week - yeah . . thats what Im talking about . .

today and tomorrow are my resting days - Im hoping to push it pertty hard for the next month then start toning it down . . My goal is about 185ish and I would like to be 10% BF or less

I've had wrist surgury so I dont feel really comfortable using the over/under grip. Eh it works for me. :)

Just keep at it & trying & the gains will come. If you stall on gains, up the calories. You would be surprised how much food you have to eat if you are actually eating clean. ( chicken, tuna, brown rice, etc)

I lucked out & work in a food warehouse so 16head of chicken costs me $14.

Im right at 6'2 and 160 lbs. Im not sure of my exact body fat % but it was right around 4-5% last time i checked. I work at a gym as a personal trainer and workout usually 6 times a week. Im a big time runner and train for 10k's and up. I just recently started training for a marathon about 5 months away so my weight will probably dip to the mid 150's  but you gotta do what ya gotta do haha. Ive been doing very intense upper body lifting for the last couple of months to switch it up and im in the "best looking" shape ive ever been. So hopefully i can keep it through my 20-25 mile runs :(
