Underhood fabric thingy majiggy

I don't know what it is called but it is that fabric stuff attached to the underside of the hood itself. I'd do a search if I knew its name as well...(if there is a topic on this already)

I want to know the pros/cons of removing it. those who have removed it, have you had any problems or bonuses? I'd also like to know what purpose it actuall serves... Thanks (and sorry if this is a repost)

I took mine off. When the hood is closed, its *slightly* louder outside the car. As far as benefits, it weighs about 3 lbs?

And I assume its just an insulator and sound deadener.

Benefits? It'll help protect you and your car from potential devastating results of a car fire. It's actually in there to insulate and protect you if there's ever a fire in your engine compartment. I would highly advise against removing it. It's made so that if your engine catches fire, the plastic plugs that hold it on melt off and it blankets your motor (it almost shrink wraps itself around the motor) and suffocates any fire to keep it controlled and possibly even extinguish it.

Its called a "silencer" by chrysler. Its purpose is to silence underhood noises. Removing it is no problem at all. I've had it removed on three of my 2gns and have had and currently have no problems what-so-ever. I''m currently polishing the paint on the underside of my hood on my 2002. I think it loks gret removed, but thats my opinion.

The SRT hood doesnt have one. My stock hood did though

+1. its also a silencer. it doesnt weigh alot. by removing this, it doesnt make your car go faster.

I removed it, regardless of the possibilities of my car catching fire and it being put out by it, if my car catches fire I am letting the sucker burn up and then getting an SRT4 - if I live.

I like the way it looks, weight redux for the win, and heck, it evens sounds louder now.

Just remember, 100 lbs is equivalent to .1 seconds in the 1/4 mile, so 3 lbs is the same as 0.003 seconds!

Took mine off to clean behind it and couldn't get it back up right (tore it a little getting it off) and just left it off. Someone told me once that the paint on the top of the hood will cook from engine heat and discolor over time but that just sounds silly to me. I think the sun would kill your paint faster! Got aftermarket hood now and as far as I know none of them have this feature or provisions to attach it so it can't be that important, can it?

Never knew that about the fire. Got rid of mine when I first bought the car. Shaved a good 1/2 lb or so and allows heat to escape through the hood better as well. Not too worried about dying in a fire.

Yeah, not many people realize that it's also there for that reason. I guess I've learned a couple interesting things about cars in the fire department.

We actually had a training dedicated to car fires and we looked at the differences in the intensities of car fires with and without the insulation blankets and it significantly reduces damage to cars when it's left in.

I'm not trying to say that it's a stupid thing to remove the blanket, it's just up to the owner. Some people, like OB, wouldn't mind burning to death and I agree that it's not the prettiest under-hood decoration. I'd only remove mine though if it started falling apart or got ripped up or something.

Well... Thanks for the info... I ditched it. Along with a couple other things... side moldings, and the sound resonator that sits in the front right fender....Oh! and the SXT badge.

Mine was removed to allow for stickers....
and cause that black heat resistant shit is just garbage. 2 years no problems.

I know its silly to put stickers on, but I think under the hood is the best place. Hell when someone is looking under your hood, your all ready showing off...

I dont have one either, because I have an aftermarket hood....I think thats an ok place to put stickers. ITs not so obvious, but if you want them, they are there.

srt hood has the intake scoop. the engi-nerds may have deemed it unnecessary due to the air flow through the hood. just a guess though.
