Post by speedyrb29 » Sun Apr 08, 2007 9:07 pm

ok im in the process of redoing my system. right now i have mb quart 6.5 componets in the front and 6x9s in the rear with 2 12inch mb quart subs in the trunk.now what im trying to figure out now is what to do for amps i want to get some real clean sound out of my componets. should i do a mono amp for the subs and a 4 channel for the speakers, or should i do somthing like just 1 5 channel amp?

5 channels are straight garbage as far as subs are concerned. your going to need a powerful 4 channel for those components and your also going to have to turn down the gains alittle for the rears. those subs tho.... im not familliar with, usually a mono block is awesome but if thier dual voice coiled subs then alot of other variables have to be considered

the subs are dual voice. I figured a good and powerful 4 channel would be needed for the speakers.

what amp would be good for the speakers if: the 6.5s are rated at 70-140 watts 4ohm and the 6x9s at 40-150 watts 4ohms?

also i belive the subs are rated at 400watts rms

it says your a certified MECP tech, and you say a comment like "5 channel amps are garbage". i guess you never heard of the memphis belle 16-MC1300D. . you cant generalize all the 5 channel amps as garbage, is also matters on the brand, a 5 channel pyramid amp is crap, and a JL audio or memphis 5 channel isnt.

to the OP if you got the money you can get the memphis amp i suggested or you can just get a 4channel amp for the speakers & a monoblock amp for the subs.

Do you happen to know what is the ohm for the subs? is it dual 2, dual 4 or what?

true, but ive never in the years of installing EVER met a 5-channel ive liked, i dont read magazines becasue eveything is biased as hell. i only know what ive worked with and will only judge upon devices ive worked with period :slap: . and no offence, but JL is straight up overpriced. and what i mean by that is for the money your going to pay for JL you can get something thats ALOT better, so compared to things in that price range its not a wise buy, all your paying for is the JL name. the same goes for Rockford-Fosgate, my store sells RF and i never recomend it (and get in trouble for it all the time) because the price RF wants us to sell it for is rediculous, for marginally more money you can get something sooo much louder/clearer. and to prove my point ive gone toe to toe with JL setups costing $500 more than my setup and ive crushed them in SPL output and in clarity. EVEN AFTER i tuned the kids amps with my scope i still crushed his ass. :owned:

since you got 2 4 ohms, if you do go ahead with a 5-channel make sure that sub channel is 2-ohm stable. other than that make sure you dot overpower those subs and youll be ok, but if i were you id go with a good mono-block

wow craz....i get the same problem. it sucks cause i see the damn rockford rep maybe three times a week. its good stuff if people want to pay the money. but it is just lke mtx or kicker..you got your good better and best. i used to work for the guys in red...and to be honest...craz is partially right. kicker makes a five channel but the sub channel only throws you 150x2 watts. i guess its all preference. how loud do you want it. the memphis is a nice amp if your only trying to drive subs that handle 300 rms each cause your dealing with a sub channel that puts out 230X2. oher than that the power is clean. but if your looking to rock the block...your going to want a seperate amp for subs only cause your power rating in a mono block amp can go way into the double digits. also on the plus side...warranty side is what i like to call it...say for instence a year or two goes down the road and that five channel starts acting up you have to send that amp in and deal with no sounds in the car whatsoever for god knows how many months. versus...subs amp goes bad..it gets sent out....they can have it for god knows how long and while you have no bass...your not stuck with no sound. four channels do go bad from time so even in a event you had to send it out...you can still have bass if your sub amp is still working and...f your local install shop or you used a harness behind the radio you can wire it up so your interiors can play with the radios speaker level outputs.

i know JL is overpriced and all that, along with the other mainstream brands. thats why I like other brands that are wayy less but will outperform the big name brands. thats why i like companies such as image dynamics, ascendent audio, RE audio, T3 audio, Fi Audio,Soundsplinter, Treo & etc.

I was just trying to say that there are "goo" 5-channel amps, but along with the performance & the name comes along that bigg price. Unless you buy online at websites such as sonicelectronix.com, then the prices wont be as much, but still too damn expensive for what your getting.

I used to run a alpine V12 5 channel with a single polk 12" DB, Polk EX 6x9s and infinity 3.5" up front. Sounded good was louder then anything I had before. Only issue I ever had was driving more then 2hrs in the summer time with the system blaring the amp would overheat.

I do miss that amp and sub.
