Turbo build

Post by jckevns » Thu Apr 12, 2007 9:59 pm

Ok this summer I plan on having my car completely ready for a turbo before I leave for school in August. So far my setup is:
Engine:
Listed in Sig
Atx Transmission:
Performance valve body
Trans cooler (It's basically just a fan)
Going to get rebuild kit from modern
Suppension:
Eibach lower springs
Tokico struts
Vibrant front and rear strut bars
Will be getting Hahn stage 2:
upgrading to 20g instead of 16g
will be using 36lb injectors
will be using Lorenzo fuel rail
possibly walbro pump spoolboy modded?
I hope to run between 12 and 15psi and get atleast 300hp
Any suggstions or comments would be great
Thanks
Jack

gonna need engine work before you crank the boost over 10...

new pistons and rods to be exact... and with out headwork, you will never see 300whp... for example... I ordered my kit from Hahn... with a COMPLETE stock motor, atx, no cams no porting, no throttle bodies etc, bone stock except the HTS2580 Kit and a on the dyno... a whopping 136hp at the wheels. so for 300... you got aLOT of work ahead of you.

now before you badmouth the hahn kit just keep in mind like i said that this is with a stock TB, stock intake, stock head, and stock pistons, at 8psi with an auto trans.

good luck with your tuning

if you want to make some real huge power on a SOHC engine, then take a look at Roach's list in the for sale post (search, then search for his name, Roach, under post author under the For Sale section) - he built a 400 hp SOHC and was working for more power when he got slammed into - then tore out the engine and sold the stuff. THAT is how you make real power on these cars.

Looks like the start of a pretty nice setup.

The only major thing I don't see listed is engine managment. You did mention the Walbro fuel pump, which is definitly a good idea, but you'll need to do more than just run a return line.

You could go with the spoolboy/return line and RRFPR, but for the same amout of money you could buy a MegaSquirt instead. Then you wouldn't have to mess with a return line, and you would have the capability to actually tune it to get the full potential from your turbo. (setting up the MS is slightly more involved on the electrical side of things, but it would be worth it) :)

If you ran 15 - 18 psi on that setup, I would say you would be getting close to 300 hp. Maybe 275 or so...

Humm... i've been thinking about a turbo as well but after all that work and only 136... not sure if its worth it. I have a stupid ATX as well :banghead:

The engine managment is the only part of the setup I haven't decided on yet. I am completely ignorant with electronical what nots so I'm a little afraid of getting MS. But I'll be taking it somewhere to get tuned once it's all put in so they should be able to tune the MS aswell.
As for building the engine if you read my sig I have rods and pistons.
As for cost everything I listed I have already purchased except atx rebuild kit and turbo stuff. If it's not installed it's sitting in my garage. So $150 for atx kit and the turbo stuff ... don't want to think about the cost
Thanks for the advice. Keep it coming

naw, you can tune MS - just read read read - think about how you have learned so much so far, by reading and doing. Same thing goes with MS. Complicated, yes but impossible no. Read and Do. :D

Are you serious ? 136whp  ? I had a custom kit installed with a huge snail 70 trim turbo that was only putting out 3-4 psi and on the dyno I did 180whp. So something had to be seriously wrong.

Congrats Playboy, I hope you do good this time around. He only made 136 most likely to a bad tune and an ATX, if I remember right, you have a 5-speed, right?
