wet sanding / clear coating

Post by silentneon01 » Sat Apr 21, 2007 12:18 am

I'm wanting to know how to wet sand. I know its normally a extremely high grint of sandpaper but what gets wet do you dap the sandpaper in water do you soak it? how do I wet sand?

From what I've been reading you don't wet sand clear coat does the clear coat give the real glossy shine and is it just the amount of layers that cause the glossness?

I'm trying to understand how these work and how it is that they work togethere.

So any help even if just a how to website would be great. thank you.

wet sand....

Really high grit sand paper... bucket of water... hose... spray part of car your doing and then dip sandpaper in bucket then millions of small circles and dont miss one spot... move to other part.. then you buff it out and all is good or w/e ur doing afterwards.

Here is an informative site that explains wetsanding:
http://www.mobileworks.com/auto_paint_wet_sanding.html

When wetsanding, you want to keep the surface you are sanding as wet as possible to keep it clean. Also, some references would suggest adding a few drops of dish soap into a bucket of water and putting the sandpaper in that to help keep the surface clean/remove contaminents and wax.

You can wetsand the clearcoat, but remember not to wetsand to far into it, as you may completely remove it. Buffing the clear coat afterwards is what truely brings out the shine.

What exactly are you trying to do? If you post specific questions, I am sure other people with give some feedback.

I wouldn't do it on stock paint. They use max 2qts of base and 2qts of clear on a Neon. You'd sand through SUPER quick.

BTW, the dish soap is to help the paper not stick to the car. :)

yes it is, and make sure you keep the paper super clean, even with one little bit of buildup from theclear it'll put giant scratches all over...

check the paper regularly (like every 10-15 strokes) and rinse it off, if there's little white slivers on it, time for a new piece, unless you want to screw up you car
