How To: Rear fascia removal - 56K warning

Post by flamingpinhead » Sat Apr 21, 2007 7:53 am

Disclaimer: I have provided the following information and pictures out of the kindness of my heart. i assume no responsibility if you mess something up, break something, break your car, injure yourself, somehow die or otherwise f*** something up as a result of reading or attempting this.

you may agree or disagree, but i swapped my SRT bumper for an 00-02 style, but could just as easily swap the 02 to 03 to look newer. anyhow, here it goes

start out, sexy SRT rear:
Image

shapes are different so youll need to get the tail lights that match the bumper (00-02 are different from 03-05)
Image
Image

youll also want somewhere safe to put the bumper cover after its off if your keeping the old one safe. i sat mine on a futon in my garage. a large blanket or a couple sheets will give a safe place to keep from scratching the cover up.

it may be helpful to jack up the rear of the car, just use a creeper and slide under, youll see two fasteners holding the bottom of the bumper cover in place that youll need to remove. dont forget to pop the light for the lisence plate out (i did). also be careful as those fastners break easily and are really in there, i needed pliers to get'em out. so it might be a good idea to pick up a pack of extras before hand.
Image
Image

There are 3 screws along the rear of the wheel well on each side holding the splash guard in place. you dont need to remove the inside fastners, as you can simply peel it back.
Image
Image

on the bottom of where the bumper meets the rear quarter, reach in there and remove all 3. you can see the bolts in the photo below:
Image
Image

yes, they can be tricky to get to
Image

now, there are 4 phillips screws along the top of the bumper cover underneath the trunk lid. so youll need to open up the trunk and they are clearly visible there. when you remove these, they are the last thing holding the bumper in place. the bumper cover is now free of the car (this is where a buddy might come in handy):
Image
Image
Image

just reverse the process to put the new one on. only issue i had is there was an extra bolt or something on the end of the bumper cover i was putting on. i used the hammer modification method on it and it fit without issue.
Image

if your swapping bumper covers to a different year group, youll need to change the tail lights before putting the new bumper cover on:
remove the tail lights (13mm socket). just pull out the fastners and pull the carpeting back a bit. the light bulbs just twist out and. remove the 3 plastic 13mm 'nuts' and the tail light will come right out. to pull back the carpet, simply remove the black plastic fastners. try to be gentle as they break easily, but are cheap to replace if you do.
Image
Image

they are plug and play between the years, just insert the new ones.

Also be advised, if you have the fosgate system. it will ease things up a bit to just remove it... it only takes 3 minutes people
Image
slide the red clip on the wiring to teh side and remove the harness. then there is a screw on the top, i think its a star bit not sure of size.
Image
Image
then the closest tail light nut holds the sub in place, just loosen or remove it. its the only one visible with the carpeting installed.

before:
Image
after:
Image

yes, i removed the spoiler as well. i had it off for sometime but put it back on briefly only for the before and after pics.
to plug up the holes, you can just get some 1/4"fuel line and 4 push fasteners at autozone. then use some touchup paint that matches the vehicle to paint them. let them dry.
then all that it took was the 4 10mm bolts that hold the spoiler on. remove all 4 (hold onto the spoiler incase its loose, so it dont go through the back windshield or anything). you might have to 'wiggle' it a bit, as its usually on there pretty good. just slide the plugs into place and use some small chunks of the fuel line to hold the bottom of the fastners. done.
Image
Image

as you can see though, the spoiler left behind some nasty scratches, and the fasntners may dig into the paint a bit themselves so some silicone might not hurt anything underneath them:
Image

Also to be noted, the stock SRT exhaust and 00-02 rear bumper will touch, with the bumper cover just resting on the exhust tip. some people have reported melting but in the couple months i had the se bumper on i didnt notice any:
Image

and just so yall know, until i can get all of the 00-01-02 parts, its going to be staying all SRT.
Image

I claybared it and she looks beautiful

Awesome man, and I like the trunk hole fillers, thats a great idea! And personally, I like the 02 bumper better :D

Although, I like the srt4 rear because of the rear lip kit on it. Tough decision, personally... match the front with an 02 RT/ACR bumper for the ultimate sleeper!!!

thats the plan eventually, throwing a regular 00-01 style front bumper on... might leave the 03 headlights on it though. no fittment issues with 00-02 bumper w/ 03+headlights... just cant do it the other way around. it will look like my old baby (and i miss the old style material used on the interior, i hate the black crap they used in the new sxts:

Nice write up dude!
Now get rid of the "SRT-4" on the back, get a different style exhaust, slap an 00-02 front on there, put some different rims on, and call it a day.
I might eventually go the sleeper route.

not all right away. would eventually like to do the front, and just get a trunk lid w/o spoiler holes drilled. there is a nice lid off a plymouth neon at the local salvage yard i wouldnt mind having, as it already has the plymouth badging.
dont know bout the exhaust or rims, ill leave the srt rims on it. but maybe maxxfab side exit exhaust one day. who knows.

I bet I know someone in town who would buy your front if you sold it (srt that is) - If you want to sell it, I will run it by them ;) He also has an 00 front in silver right now ;)

Anyway, where did you take those pics at, what part of town you live in?

not at all interested in selling my stock bumpers, the stock srt bumper is actually going back on. my wife hates having a mixed car. so until i get a 00-01 front, it will stay with the bumper, but most likely will keep it wingless. anyhow, if he finds a front let me know, i might take over his stock front bumper. is it a regular 00-01 silver front? or is it 02, RT????

I see 2 discrepancies in your write-up.

1.) I switched 2001 taillights to 2002 taillights and there was a slight difference that kept them from fitting. Seems that on the 02 lights, they moved the small plastic mounting "prongs". I had to snip them off to make the light seat correctly. No big deal because you still have the 3 screws that the plastic nuts go onto to locate the light. Now, going from 2001 to 2003 tails, I had NO problems whatsoever.

2.) I had a 2002 SXT front on my car and attempted to fit 2003 headlights. It physically would not work. I actually cracked the paint on the bumper pushing down to get the headlight to fit because the 03+ headlights were too tall, and the bottom of the light makes the bumper hit the sharp core support underneath (where it is welded together).

:)

#1, similar to the 'hammer modification' i had to use to get the 01 to fit. only i think your modification was less violent
but 01-03, im assuming you swapped bumper covers as well? they are completely differnt shapes along the bottom:
Image
(edit wow, i just noticed i posted completley the wrong pic, lol)

#2, your talkig about headlights... i appreciate the heads up on the fittment of the lights on the older style bumper. didnt realize there were any dimensional differences in the large 'headlight' part of the 00-02 and the 03+ headlight/signal unit. sorry to hear you jacked up your bumper in the effort.
if i ever do a writeup after doing the swap, ill have to be sure to include this.

thanks for the heads up on the 00-02 tails, i thought all 00-02 were the same (not even sure which ones i actually have then)

I have an SRT bumper but it is not painted yet, so I am rolling with a 1" gap between the 01 bumper and 03 tails.

Your car came with a fosgate amp/sub? mine only came with kicker....
I'm wondering who kicker should sue, dodge, or rockford fosgate for completely biting their product design, and for putting kicker on their product.

(I'm only being a prick cause the amp blatently says kicker in the pic)

The tails from the 00-02 are shaped differently at the bottom only. Any tail lights from the 03 and up will bolt right in and will eliminate the gap you see on the red neon.

00-02 bumper can use 00-02 tail lights
03+ bumpers can use 03+ tail lights (srt and non-srt use the same lights)
