what exactly are you trying to paint that you would need to disengage the airbags?

You should remove the battery cables. That helps, and is a good start, but yeah, what are you painting that you need to disengage the Air bags?

Remove the battery cable, drain power from everything by just letting it sit, or by turning your key to accessories. On the drivers side airbag, there are 2 screws on the sides, and then it lifts out and you can unclip the 2 clips underneath it (horn and airbag). On the passenger side, under your glove box (you have to remove it) you will see 3 bolts, one is really hard to get to. Remove those, and then lift out and disconnect the clips.

You should be, the airbags are set off by electrical means.
If you accidentally short the leads, you wont have a face anymore.
Justin- I have nothing but smart ass remarks to add.
